Notes:
Collaboration across lines of business is among the most difficult of all types of synergy to achieve: an extreme case of sibling rivalry is the author’s analogy. This article starts by examining why it is worthwhile – and, in today’s world, even perhaps essential. The author explores the challenges involved and the new skill sets required as collaboration evolves, illustrating her argument with experience from two real-life attempts to achieve synergy, in a high-tech company and a bank. One has so far succeeded and the other has failed. The article ends by discussing the critical role of top managers – even if they try to play no role at all.
