Notes: A systematic theoretical study of the electronic and optical properties of Ga1−xInxAs self-assembled quantum wires (QWRs) made of short-period superlattices with strain-induced lateral ordering is presented. The theory is based on the effective bond-orbital model combined with a valence-force-field (VFF) model. Valence-band anisotropy, band mixing, and effects due to local strain distribution at the atomistic level are all taken into account. Several structure models with varying degrees of alloy mixing for lateral modulation are considered. A VFF model is used to find the equilibrium atomic positions in the QWR structure by minimizing the lattice energy. The strain tensor at each atomic (In or Ga) site is then obtained and included in the calculation of electronic states and optical properties. It is found that different local arrangement of atoms leads to very different strain distribution, which in turn alters the optical properties. In particular, we find that in model structures with thick capping layer the electrons and holes are confined in the Ga-rich region and the optical anisotropy can be reversed due to the variation of lateral alloy mixing, while for model structures with thin capping layer the electrons and holes are confined in the In-rich region, and the optical anisotropy is much less sensitive to the lateral alloy mixing. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Band structures and optical matrix elements of strained multiple quantum wires (QWRs) are investigated theoretically via the effective bond-orbital model, which takes into account the effects of valence band anisotropy and the band mixing. In particular, the Ga1−xInxAs QWRs grown by strain-induced lateral ordering (SILO) are considered. Recently, long wavelength Ga1−xInxAs QWR lasers have been fabricated via a single step molecular beam epitaxy technique which uses the SILO process [S. T. Chou, K. Y. Cheng, L. J. Chow, and K. C. Hsieh, Appl. Phys. Lett. 17, 2220 (1995); J. Appl. Phys. 78, 6270 (1995); J. Vac. Sci Technol. B 13, 650 (1995); K. Y. Cheng, K. C. Hsien, and J. N. Baillargeon, Appl. Phys. Lett. 60, 2892 (1992)]. Low threshold current and high optical anisotropy have been achieved. Multiaxial strains [combinations of biaxial strains in the (001) and (110) planes] for QWRs are considered. Our calculated anisotropy in optical matrix elements (for light polarized parallel versus perpendicular to the QWRs' axis) is in good agreement with experiment. We also find that the strain tends to increase the quantum confinement and enhance the anisotropy of the optical transitions. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Variability and associated mechanisms of summer rainfall over east China are identified and described using both observations and a general circulation model (GCM) simulation. The observations include two data sets: the 90-station, 1470–1988 annual drought/flood index and the 60-station, 1889–1988 monthly mean precipitation measurements. The GCM data set is a 100-year equilibrium simulation of the present climate. Spectra of the drought/flood index indicate decadal cycles which decrease from north (≈47 y) to south (≈21 y). Correlation coefficients show decadal variability in the relationship between index values along the Yangtse River valley and those over northeast and southeast China. Analysis of the measured data confirms this result; for example, the correlation was small during 1889–1918, but significantly negative during 1930–1959. When compared with precipitation measurements, the GCM better simulates monthly means and variances along the Yangtse River valley. Three distinct 30-year periods of interannual variability in summer rainfall are found over this area. During each period, rainfall is negatively correlated with spring surface temperature over a remote region and is identified with variations in a specific component of the east Asian monsoon circulation: (1) when Eurasian temperatures decrease, the thermal contrast across the Mei-Yu front increases and frontal rainfall intensities; (2) lower temperatures over the Sea of Japan/northwest Pacific Ocean are identified with enhanced easterly flow, moisture transport and rainfall; (3) when tropical east Pacific Ocean temperatures decrease, rainfall associated with the low latitude monsoon trough increases. Given that the GCM generates decadal changes in the relationship between the physical mechanisms, the east Asian monsoon and planetary general circulations and east China rainfall, future studies should focus on the predictability of these changes with the use of improved and much longer GCM simulations.

Notes: Abstract A finite composite laminate weakened by multiple elliptical holes of arbitrary distribution, arbitrary orientation and arbitrary dimension, is treated as an anisotropic, finite multiple connected thin plate. Using the complex potential method in plane theory of heat conduction and elasticity of an anisotropic body, the analytical solution of a finite composite laminated plate subjected to arbitrary mechanical and thermal loads with multiple elliptical holes is obtained by means of the Faber series expansion, mapping and the least square boundary collocation technique. The effects of some parameters on the thermostress distribution are studied in detail. Some conclusions are drawn.

Description: The establishment of axon/dendrite polarity is fundamental for neurons to integrate into functional circuits, and this process is critically dependent on microtubules (MTs). In the early stages of the establishment process, MTs in axons change dramatically with the morphological building of neurons; however, how the MT network changes are triggered is unclear. Here we show that CAMSAP1 plays a decisive role in the neuronal axon identification process by regulating the number of MTs. Neurons lacking CAMSAP1 form a multiple axon phenotype in vitro, while the multipolar-bipolar transition and radial migration are blocked in vivo. We demonstrate that the polarity regulator MARK2 kinase phosphorylates CAMSAP1 and affects its ability to bind to MTs, which in turn changes the protection of MT minus-ends and also triggers asymmetric distribution of MTs. Our results indicate that the polarized MT network in neurons is a decisive factor in establishing axon/dendritic polarity and is initially triggered by polarized signals.
