    Notes: The aim of this paper is to propose the Classification syllogism, a method for the vehicledesign based on the Kansei Engineering. And thus a smart data acquisition and analysis system forFATV design is constructed. The Classification syllogism gives a classification according to theproduct’s perceptual arrangement of ideas, by comparing, it finds out the relationship of physicalelements from different feeling levels and then deduces the product physical parameter till finaloutcome appears.     Notes: Structural health monitoring (SHM) is becoming a popular topic. Carbon fiber reinforcedconcrete (CFRC) is an intrinsically smart material that can sense strain. The resistivity increasesreversibly under tension and decreases under compression. A new skin-like sensor —cement-basedsmart layer had been put forward, which can serve as whole field strain sensor. The smart layer issatisfactorily consistent with concrete structure. The smart layer is a thin carbon fiber mat cementbasedcomposite material layer with finite electrodes. It can cover the surface of concrete structure,and provide on-line reliable information about the deformation of whole concrete structure. Thestatic characteristics of the new-type sensor had been researched. Its gage factor is 20-25 undertension and 25-30 under compression within the elastic deformation range. Furthermore the smartlayer has satisfactory linearity and repeatability. In this paper, the sensor characteristics of the barecarbon fiber mat have been reached. The resistivity of carbon fiber mat has good agreement withstrain under uniaxial tension. The gage factor can be up to 375, and the sensor limit can be up to10000 microstrain. The strain and the fractional change in electrical resistance .R/R0 are totallyreversible and reproducible under cyclic loading and amplitude-variable cyclic tensile loading

    Notes: Microstructural examinations of T6-treated WE54 magnesium alloy were conducted afterdifferent aging conditions, and the influence of aging on electrochemical behavior of this alloy wasinvestigated. For three batches of samples, with increasing aging time, the amount of precipitatephases was greatly promoted, and they formed in a strengthening continuous way. Electrochemicalstudy showed that the value of corrosion potential followed the tendency to decrease when the agingcondition transformed from under-aged to peak-aged. However, after peak-aging, the corrosionpotential was raised to higher values. Explanations for the observed phenomena were based on therelationship between microstructure, especially precipitate phases, and electrochemical behavior. Atunder-aged condition, matrix served as galvanic cathode and precipitates acted as galvanic anode.Because the amount of precipitate would rise with prolonging aging time, it is natural that corrosionpotential decreased. For over-aged alloys, metastable precipitate phases might in situ change toequilibrium phases, rendering increase of corrosion potential possible

    Notes: Myxococcus xanthus cells glide on solid surfaces and are chemotactically stimulated by certain phosphatidylethanolamine species. The dif gene cluster consists of six genes, difABCDEG, five of which encode proteins homologous to known chemotaxis proteins. DifA and DifE are required for the biosynthesis of fibrils, an extracellular matrix comprised of polysaccharide and protein. Chemotactic stimulation by 1,2-O-Bis[11-(Z)-hexadecenoyl]-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylethanolamine (16:1 PE) and dilauroyl PE (12:0 PE) requires fibrils. Although previous work has shown that difA and difE mutants are not stimulated by 12:0 PE, these results do not distinguish between a dependence on fibrils or a direct role in chemosensory transduction. Here we provide evidence that the Dif chemosensory pathway directly mediates PE sensory transduction. First, stimulation by and adaptation to 16:1 PE requires all of the dif genes, including difBDG, which are not essential for fibril biogenesis. Second, a specific residue within the first putative methylation domain of DifA is required for stimulation by 16:1 PE but not fibril biogenesis. Transmembrane signalling through a chimeric NarX-DifA chemoreceptor is required for fibril formation but not for stimulation by or adaptation to 16:1 PE. Third, difD and difE are required for stimulation by dioleoyl PE (18:1 PE) although the response does not require fibrils. Taken together these results argue that the Dif pathway mediates both matrix formation and lipid chemotaxis.

    Notes: Based on the functional characteristics of carbon fiber reinforced concrete (CFRC), an improved infrared nondestructive testing method, to detect crack in CFRC by using infrared thermography, is presented in this paper. The principle is that when a CFRC specimen is applied a low voltage, crack existing in the specimen will result in non-homogeneous surface temperature distribution due to the electro-thermal effect of the material. Monitoring the temperature difference on the surface, the crack under the observed surface can be inspected by using infrared thermography. In theory, the mechanism causing the temperature difference comes down to an unsteady heat transfer problem with internal energy sources. In the case of the thermo-physical property of CFRC as given, the sensitivity of this method to the depth of the crack is analyzed by numerical computation

    Notes: Cement structures such as bridges and dams often come into being distortion or exhibit excessive thermal stresses due to the sun radiation or freeze-thaw cycle. Therefore, temperature especially inner temperature difference or deformation of structures must be controlled or regulated sometimes in order to reduce thermal stresses or excessive deformation and to extend the life-span of structures. In this paper, the electro-thermal effects of smart cement are used to adjust temperaturedifference or deformation of concrete beams without the need of peripheral non-structural materials. Concrete beams for temperature and deformation adjustment were fabricated, and some experimental results as well as the related conclusions about temperature difference and deformation were produced. Based on these results, experiments of temperature difference or deflection adjustment are further conducted successfully. The research results in this paper are the bases of temperature and deformation adjustment for mass concrete structures. A new path will be broken to adjust temperature or deformation easily for some structures

    Notes: Poly(vinyl benzyl chloride) latex was reacted with ethanolamine and with amine terminated chain molecules containing up to 33 ethylene oxide residues. The kinetics of these reactions were essentially independent of the length of the chain carrying the amine group. An increasing length of the chains bound to the surface of the latex particles produced an increasing latex stabilization.

    Description: Paramyxoviruses include many important animal and human pathogens. Most paramyxoviruses have two integral membrane proteins: fusion protein (F) and attachment proteins hemagglutinin, hemagglutinin–neuraminidase, or glycoprotein (G), which are critical for viral entry into cells. J paramyxovirus (JPV) encodes four integral membrane proteins: F, G, SH, and transmembrane (TM). The function of TM is not known. In this work, we have generated a viable JPV lacking TM (JPV∆TM). JPV∆TM formed opaque plaques compared with JPV. Quantitative syncytia assays showed that JPV∆TM was defective in promoting cell-to-cell fusion (i.e., syncytia formation) compared with JPV. Furthermore, cells separately expressing F, G, TM, or F plus G did not form syncytia whereas cells expressing F plus TM formed some syncytia. However, syncytia formation was much greater with coexpression of F, G, and TM. Biochemical analysis indicates that F, G, and TM interact with each other. A small hydrophobic region in the TM ectodomain from amino acid residues 118 to 132, the hydrophobic loop (HL), was important for syncytial promotion, suggesting that the TM HL region plays a critical role in cell-to-cell fusion.
