Notes: The fermentation of Streptomyces griseus for the production of cycloheximide is similar to other antibiotic fermentations in that product synthesis is subject to feedback regulation and the desired product is degraded in the fermentation broth. The productivity of this fermentation can thus be dramatically increased by removing the antibiotic from the whole broth as it is produced. One means for effecting this on-line product removal is to contact the whole fermentation broth with neutral polymeric resin immobilized in hydrogel beads. The antibiotic adsorbs to the immobilized resin via hydrophobic interactions. In this work, the adsorption of the antibiotic onto the immobilized resin was characterized. A biochemical model of the fermentation was then used to describe the time profiles of biomass, substrate, and antibiotic in a fermentation system in which whole broth is circulated from the fermentor through a continuously stirred extractor containing the adsorbent beads. Various operating conditions were examined to optimize the productivity of the fermentation.

Notes: Biosensors with animal and microbial cells immobilized close to the tip of a membrane electrode have been developed for chemical and drug testing. Our experimental results show that biosensors can be used for drug screening and to provide useful information about various cell-chemical interactions. A computer aided analysis (CAA) software package is being developed here using the biosensor for various screening purposes. This software package enables us to use a computer to analyze the biosensor dynamic responses. Computer simulation and parameter estimation techniques are used to select the best model and to describe the biochemical and pharmacologic effects of various chemicals and drugs on different cell lines.

Description: Dense ceramics in SrNdAlO 4 -Sr 2 TiO 4 system were synthesized by a solid-state reaction method, and their microstructures and microwave dielectric characteristics were investigated. The K 2 NiF 4 -type solid solutions with general formula Sr 1+ x Nd 1- x Al 1- x Ti x O 4 were obtained in the entire composition range (0.05 ≤  x  ≤   0.9). With increasing x , the dielectric constant ε r increased from 19.2 to 25, and the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency τ f was adjusted from −16.7 to 24.6 ppm/°C. The significantly improved Qf value was achieved in the present ceramics with increasing x , and it reached a maximum at x  =   0.6. The best combination of microwave dielectric characteristics was achieved at x  =   0.6 (ε r   = 23.6, Qf  = 86,300 GHz, τ f  = 10.9 ppm/ o C). The reduced interlayer polarization with Sr/Ti cosubstitution in SrNdAlO 4 contributed to the improved Qf , while the decreased tolerance factor and increased inner stress brought the negative effects.

Description: The microwave dielectric properties of some typical low-loss dielectric ceramics (CaNdAlO 4 , Ba(Mg 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 , Ba(Zn 1/3 Nb 2/3 )O 3 , Ba 4 Sm 9.33 Ti 18 O 54 , Ca 0.71 Nd 0.26 TiO 3 and SrTiO 3 ) were evaluated at different frequencies by using high-order TE 0np resonant modes of resonant cavity method. The dielectric constant shows little dependence on frequency for these microwave dielectric ceramics, while the Qf value increases with frequency in the measurement frequency range of 3–14 GHz. The results indicate that the Qf value as a frequency-independent constant at microwave frequencies is not valid for these microwave dielectric ceramics, while the constant Qf value has been accepted as a common recognition for a long period. The frequency dependence of Qf value is attributed to the defects-induced extrinsic dielectric loss, which cannot be avoided in actual microwave dielectric ceramics.

    Description: SrLn 2 Al 2 O 7 (Ln = La, Nd, Sm) ceramics were proposed and investigated as new candidates for ultra-low loss microwave dielectric materials. These ceramics indicated the Ruddlesden–Popper structure of general formula A n +1 B n O 3 n +1 with n  = 2, which was composed by n perovskite layers alternating with one rock-salt layer. Very high Qf value combined with a dielectric constant around 20 was obtained in the present ceramics, where the near-zero temperature coefficient of resonant frequency varied from negative to positive with changing Ln from La to Sm. The best combination of microwave dielectric characteristics was obtained as the following: ε r  = 18.2, Qf  = 71,680 GHz, and τ f  = −22.1 ppm/°C for SrLa 2 Al 2 O 7 ; ε r  = 20.5, Qf  = 65,500 GHz, and τ f  = −4.3 ppm/°C for SrNd 2 Al 2 O 7 ; and ε r  = 21.6, Qf  = 64,680 GHz, and τ f  = +4.0 ppm/°C for SrSm 2 Al 2 O 7 .

Description: Effects of Mg substitution on order/disorder transition, microstructure, and microwave dielectric characteristics of Ba (( Co 0.6 Zn 0.4 ) 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) O 3 complex perovskite ceramics have been investigated. The ordered complex perovskite solid solutions are obtained in Ba (( Co 0.6− x /2 Zn 0.4− x /2 Mg x ) 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) O 3 ceramics ( x  = 0, 0.1, 0.2, and 0.3), and the ordering degree in the as-sintered dense ceramics increases with increasing Mg -substitution amount. The significantly improved Qf value is obtained in the present ceramics with increasing x , whereas the dielectric constant decreases slightly together with some increase of temperature coefficient of resonant frequency. The best combination of microwave dielectric characteristics is obtained in the composition of x  = 0.3: ε r  = 33.7, Qf  = 93 800 GHz, and τ f  = 9.6 ppm/°C. In the Mg -substituted compositions, clear domain boundaries are obtained and the domain size increases as x increases, the highest Qf value is obtained when the domain size is about 40–60 nm in the ceramics with x  = 0.3. The increased ordering degree and the fine ordering domain structure are considered to primarily contribute to the significant increase of Qf value in the Mg -substituted Ba (( Co 0.6 Zn 0.4 ) 1/3 Nb 2/3 ) O 3 complex perovskite ceramics.

Description: A comprehensive review on the latest development of the ferroelectric transition and low-temperature dielectric relaxations of filled tungsten bronze ceramics are presented together with some new issues. In the filled tungsten bronze ceramics M 6− p R p Ti 2+ p Nb 8− p O 30 ( p  = 1, 2; M = Ba or Sr; R = rare earth or Bi), a ferroelectric transition is generally indicated together with up to three low-temperature dielectric relaxations. The ferroelectric transition is determined as 4/mmm → 4 mm, and the low-temperature dielectric relaxations are deeply concerned with the structure modulations due to the order/disorder of ions in A 1 and A 2 sites, their random cross occupancy, and the order/disorder of B-site ions. Both the ferroelectric transition and low-temperature dielectric relaxations are dominated by the composition and radius difference between A 1- and A 2-site ions, ∆ r . The normal ferroelectric transition might be expected if the ratio of the biggest ion and second big ion is 2:1, otherwise the diffuse or relaxor ferroelectric is expected. Meanwhile, the larger ∆ r generally results in the normal ferroelectric, and the smaller ∆ r will lead to the diffuse or relaxor ferroelectric. Moreover, the effects of A sites order/disorder and the random cross occupancy of A-site ions are primary, and the effects of B-site ordering/disordering are secondary. The right ratio of 2:1 for A2- and A1-site ions and the large ∆ r should be the guidelines for designing the possible multiferroic tungsten bronzes.
