Das beim Schmelzen des 1-Triphenylmethyl-4.5-diphenyl-imidazols entstehende Umlagerungsprodukt wurde als 2-Triphenylmethyl-4.5-diphenyl-imidazol erkannt. Bei der Reaktion zwischen 4.5-Diphenyl-imidazol-silber und Triphenylchlormethan in siedendem absol. Toluol und Xylol entsteht teilweise, in Biphenyl bei 230° ausschließlich, das 2-Triphenylmethyl-4.5-diphenyl-imidazol. Das 1-Triphenylmethyl-4.5-bis-[p-biphenylyl]-imidazol lagert sich beim Erhitzen ebenfalls zur 2-Triphenylmethyl-Verbindung um. Eine Reihe von 1-Triarylmethyl-4.5-diaryl-imidazolen zersetzt sich beim Schmelzen zum Imidazol-Derivat und nicht isolierbaren Reaktionsprodukten des Triarylmethyl-Restes.
