Notes: Abstract The goal of this paper is to improve the efficiency of collision detection algorithms applied to highly complex geometry scenes not having geometry coherence. Efficiency is improved by reducing the number of objects to be checked for collisions and accelerating the fundamental repeating checks on which the collision detection process relies. The number of objects to be checked is decreased by combining hierarchical representation techniques with incremental methods. The fundamental repeating check, actually a collision check between two bounding boxes, is accelerated by using 3D bounding boxes each having an associated transformation for mapping its vertices from a local to a world coordinate system (CS). This acceleration is based on the observation that two boxes (A andB) intersect if and only if the projections ofA andB intersect on all three axis-aligned orthographic views, both forA in the local CS ofB and forB in the local CS ofA. These algorithms have been successfully implemented in simulating dynamic scenes with high geometry complexity and as avirtual collision detection sensor for off-line robot motion planning.

Notes: Abstract The behaviour of a drill and a clamping unit was investigated in high-performance drilling. Some clamping units were characterised experimentally. In a series of experiments, the free-rotating drill behaviour, and the drilling events were investigated under high-performance conditions. A non-rotating measurement system, including proper procedures for signal processing, enabled the presentation of all measured values in terms and coordinates of the rotating tool. This led to a better understanding of the first-contact event, the penetration and the full drilling phases, as well as the influence of the clamping unit under different cutting conditions.

Notes: Abstract Modern autonomous vehicles are using more than one method for performing the positioning task. The most common positioning methods for indoor vehicles are odometry for relative positioning and triangulation for absolute positioning. In many cases a Kalman filter is required to merge the data from the positioning systems and determines the vehicle position based on error analysis of the measurements and calculation procedures. A Kalman filter is particularly advantageous for “on-the-fly” positioning, which is performed while the vehicle is in motion. This paper presents the implementation of a Kalman filter in “ROBI” — an AGV for material handling in a manufacturing environment. The performance of the filter in estimating the position of the AGV and the effect of motion parameters (speed, path curvature, beacon layout etc.) on filter accuracy are shown.

Description / Table of Contents: The behaviour of Pt/PtRh and Ni/NiMo thermal elements in the high temperature vacuum furnace in the presence of material containing chromiumDuring annealing under vacuum (10-3 to 10-4 Torr) at temperatures exceeding 1200° C, it is always necessary to reckon with the evaporation of Cr from the built-in parts of the furnace (highly alloyed steels). The evaporated Cr is, inter alia, deposited on the thermo-elements, affecting their thermal potentials and reducing their service life, due to the formation of hard and brittle inter-metal compounds. A remedy consists in the use of vacuum-tight thermo-element protection tubes (which admittedly gives rise to a certain inertia of indication) or in the reduction of the vacuum through the addition of nitrogen as soon as a temperature of 1000° C is exceeded. It is also recommended to use ceramic components or those consisting of Mo plates without Cr content.

Description / Table of Contents: Comparative corrosion test of dental alloys in a bioreactorThe demands in the modern prosthetics require the insertion of ceramics, polymers, metals and composites in the oral cavity. To realise dental applications of ceramics and polymers intensive efforts was made in research and development in the last years.Nevertheless metallic materials possess one of the most important positions in biomedical engineering. The excellent biofunctionality of the metallic dental materials is responsible for this situation. One of the greatest disadvantages by integrating metallic materials in the human organism is the great susceptibility to corrosion in the biological environment.Experiments to describe the corrosion behaviour under simulated in-vivo conditions should be used to estimate the biocompatibility of the inserted biomaterials. The quality of the simulated biological environment defines the clinical relevance of these experiments. In this work a research team of the „Thüringer Arbeitsgemeinschaft Biomaterial e.V.“ reports about corrosion experiments on precious and non-precious dental alloys in an in-vitro test system, which represents a new simulation equipment for the development of a artificial oral cavity.
