Notes: The general theoretical-experimental method recently formulated for investigating dynamic properties of slow-orientational anisotropic ESR hyperfine centers under orientational diffusion is applied to normal nitroxide radicals with14N(I=1). This application permits the determination of slow-orientational correlation times, motional inhomogeneous linewidths, and temperature-dependent hyperfine coupling constants from the first- and second-derivative peak positions of nitroxide ESR hyperfine structures in polycrystalline-amorphous condensed matter.

Notes: A simple, direct approach is presented for determining fast orientational-motional correlation times τ associated with motionally narrowed electron-spin-resonance (ESR) hyperfine spectra of perdeuterated nitroxide radicals enriched with 15N (I=1/2). This approach is based on (1) the experimental determination of net dynamic line broadening by taking the difference in linewidth between the M=+1/2 and M=−1/2 nitroxide hyperfine components, (2) the Kivelson expression for fast tumbling motional ESR hyperfine linewidth, (3) a simple, effective method of treating the problem of experimental nitroxide ESR hyperfine line shapes consisting of Gaussian and Lorentzian components, and (4) the spin-Hamiltonian constants adjusted for fast tumbling nitroxide radicals at high temperature from their rigid limit values at low temperatures. It is shown that the present method yields more reliable and accurate experimental τ values than those determined by conventional methods for fast tumbling nitroxide radicals. Detailed experimental procedures are described for the case of poly(ethylene oxide) polymer containing perdeuterated and 15N-enriched TANOL (TANOLD-15) spin probes.

Notes: The paramagnetic resonance powder spectrum of an electron or nuclear spin system involving an isotropic Zeeman and an axially symmetric, first-order fine-structure splitting has been numerically investigated for the purpose of finding a simple, direct, and accurate method for determining its single-crystal parameters in polycrystalline-amorphous samples. It is shown that from the positions and relative intensities of some selected first- and second-derivative peaks of the axial fine-structure powder spectrum, one can directly determine with high accuracy the associated coupling constant, single-crystal line shape, and single-crystal linewidth for the external magnetic field perpendicular as well as parallel to the axially symmetric axis. The results of an experimental application of this method to the case of a randomly oriented zinc chelate biradical system are presented. The new powder spectrum method is applicable to first-order axially symmetric ESR and NMR quadrupole and dipole-dipole pair centers with isotropic g values under rigid state or slow tumbling orientational motion in polycrystalline-amorphous substances.

Notes: It is shown that one of the restricted ensemble averaging processes recently formulated by Kivelson and Lee for an axially symmetric ESR system is valid only for the ESR symmetry axis parallel to the ESR external magnetic field, but not for other general orientations. The other averaging process is valid for all orientations.

Notes: The new method recently formulated for analyzing the fast tumbling motional ESR hyperfine spectra of perdeuterated nitroxide radicals enriched with 15N(I=1/2) TANOLD-15 (4-hydroxy, 2,2,6,6-tetranethylpiperidine-d17-1-oxyl) are applied to perdeuterated, normal nitroxide radicals with 14N (I=1), TANOLD-14, which are widely utilized as spin probes and labels. The fast motional correlation times τ obtained from different pairs of ESR hyperfine lines from TANOLD-14 spin probes in poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) polymer matrix are not only mutually consistent, but also agree with those obtained from TANOLD-15 spin probes on the same host matrix. The τ values determined with the present method for normal nitroxide radicals containing 14N should be more accurate and reliable than those obtained with other conventional methods.

Notes: The electron spin-resonance ESR hyperfine spectra computed by the Freed numerical–theoretical method have been critically compared with the recent analytical–theoretical results for axially symmetric nitroxide ESR centers undergoing isotropic orientational diffusion motion in polycrystalline-amorphous substances. Consistent with the new analytical–theoretical results, the dependencies of slow-motional line broadening and line shift on the associated orientational correlation time τ of the parallel-edge ESR centers determined from the Freed theoretical spectra are found to be τ−1/2 within numerical computational limits. In addition to this τ dependence, the absolute magnitudes of the slow-motional line broadening and line shift are in reasonable agreement between the two theories. Except for the occurrence of some unexplainable extra lines in the Freed theoretical spectra, their overall powder-pattern structures are consistent with those computed by the analytical–theoretical results.

Notes: Purpose - Computer assisted audit techniques (CAATs) encompass a range of computerized techniques that internal and external auditors use to facilitate their audit objectives. One of the most important CAATs is generalized audit software (GAS), which is a class of packaged software that allows auditors to interrogate a variety of databases, application software and other sources and then conduct analyzes and audit routines on the extracted or live data. This study seeks to evaluate the nature and extent of the utilization of CAATs in financial institutions. In particular, the study establishes the extent and nature of use of GAS by bank internal auditors and their external auditors. The study is conducted with large local and international commercial banks in Singapore, a major financial center. Given the limited research on GAS in general and in the financial services sector in particular, the study uses exploratory qualitative research. Design/methodology/approach - Qualitative research employing depth interviews with internal and external auditors of financial institutions. Finding - The research finds that the extent and range of use of GAS varies widely between the institutions in the sample. Internal auditors see GAS primarily as a tool for special investigations rather than as a foundation for their regular audit work. External auditors make no use of GAS, citing the inapplicability of this class of tool to the nature of testing the financial statement assertions or the extent or quality of computerized internal controls maintained by the bank. Research limitations/implications - This is a small sample study. While the data are rich, the findings cannot necessarily be extrapolated to broader populations. Practical implications - This study provides guidance on the role that CAATs play in the audit process of financial institutions that is relevant for the audit community. Originality/value - This is the first in-depth study of the application of CAATs to financial institutions.

Notes: To manufacture SLGTs (Self-Luminous Glass Tubes), 4 core technologies are needed: coating technology, tritium injection technology, laser sealing/cutting technology and tritium handling technology. The inside of the glass tubes is coated with greenish ZnS phosphor particles with sizes varying from 4~5 [µm], and Cu, and Al as an activator and a co-dopant, respectively. We also found that it would be possible to produce a phosphor coated glass tube for the SLGT using the well established cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) bulb manufacturing technology. The conceptual design of the main process loop (PL) is almost done. A delicate technique will be needed for the sealing/cutting of the glass tubes. Instead of the existing torch technology, a new technology using a pulse-type laser is under investigation. The design basis of the tritium handling facilities is to minimize the operator's exposure to tritium uptake and the emission of tritium to the environment. To fulfill the requirements, major tritium handling components are located in thesecondary containment such as the glove boxes (GBs) and/or the fume hoods. The tritium recovery system (TRS) is connected to a GB and PL to minimize the release of tritium as well as to remove the moisture and oxygen in the GB
