Abstract: This book describes and illustrates a variety of minimally invasive approaches to the thoracic spine, covering procedures applicable in not only degenerative diseases but also deformities and trauma. Surgery to the thoracic spine is demanding because of the surrounding ribs, lungs, heart, and large blood vessels and the challenges posed by the vulnerable spinal cord within a relatively small spinal canal. Consequently, postsurgical morbidity is often high. In this context, minimally invasive surgery offers significant benefits, but to date, comprehensive coverage in textbooks is lacking owing to the limited experience in the use of minimally invasive surgical techniques. This book will be ideal for all who are searching for clear guidance that is faithful to the established principles of spine surgery and evidence-based medicine. In addition to the comprehensive coverage of procedures appropriate in different pathologies, including thoracic disc herniation, ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament, ossification of the ligamentum flavum, and stenosis, individual chapters address the transforaminal endoscopic approach, interventional treatment, intraoperative neuromonitoring, and navigation for thoracic spine surgery.

Notes: T type megasonic waveguide was analyzed by finite element method (FEM), acoustic pressuremeasurements and particle removal efficiency for the single wafer cleaning application. Compared toconventional longitudinal waves, a transverse waves were generated in a T type waveguide. Not likelongitudinal waves, transverse waves showed changes of direction and phase which increased thecleaning efficiency

Notes: Abstract In this paper, the notions of convex chain visibility and reflex chain visibility of a simple polygonP are introduced, and some optimal algorithms concerned with convex- and reflex-chain visibility problems are described. For a convex-chain visibility problem, two linear-time algorithms are exhibited for determining whether or notP is visible from a given convex chain; one is the turn-checking approach and the other is the decomposition approach based on checking edge visibilities. We also present a linear-time algorithm for finding, if any, all maximal convex chains of a given polygonP from whichP is visible, where a maximal convex chain is a convex chain which does not properly include any other convex chains. It can be made by showing that there can be at most four visible maximal convex chains inP with an empty kernel. By similar arguments, we show that the same problems for reflex chain visibility can be easily solved in linear time.

Notes: An efficient and accurate numerical program with enhanced point collocation meshfreemethod is developed to simulate crack propagation under dynamic loading conditions. The enhancedmeshfree method with point collocation formulation and derivative approximation in solids ispresented. This study also presents the crack propagation criterion and computation of propagatingdirection, and the total structure of the numerical program named PCMDYC(Point CollocationMeshfree method for DYnamic Crack propagation). Several examples of crack propagation underdynamic loads are analyzed to simulate the arbitrary crack propagation under dynamic loads. Theresults show that PCMDYC predicts the propagating path of crack under dynamic loading conditionsaccurately and robustly

Notes: Enormous use of ground for various purposes in urban areas has led to disappearance of green-planted surfaces. Considering space constraints, planted roofs become one promising and stabilizing choice to improve amenity and reduce the thermal loads on the building’s shell. However, a critical issue for rooftop garden is the release of pollutants in urban runoff. Not only particles butalso dissolved pollutants should be removed from building drainage because of their potential impact on water environment. To add functions for the control of pollutant outflow, bauxsite minerals made of red waste from alumina refineries were incorporated in the rooftop garden as a special soil. The minerals have high trapping capacities for trace metals and other soluble species. Moreover, they areeasy to integrate with rooftop garden systems. Based on their equilibrium capacity for removing pollutants, an optimum amount of bauxsite minerals is suggested. The characteristics of rainwater runoff and pollutants release were compared for normal and modified rooftop garden in laboratory scale. As expected, the green roof system with the bauxsite layer reduces the concentration of heavy metals. The technique used in this study is also likely to be implemented in other green surfaces in housing complexes

Notes: The creation of large impervious surface in urban and urbanizing areas commonly leads to multiple impacts on the stream systems including higher peak runoff, reduced infiltration, and increased pollutant loads to streams. Permeable pavements made up of a matrix of concrete blocks with voids offer one solution to the problem of increased stormwater runoff and decreased stream water quality. Experiment results indicate that lower pore size pavement showed a higher runoff reduction rate compared with other pavement. Also, water absorption capability of pavement willdrop the surface temperature of pavement. Compared to runoff, the turbidity and phosphorus concentration were lower than 27 [NTU] and 0.5 [mg/L], respectively. It appears that turbidity and hosphorus are concentrated in the pavement void

Notes: The pollutants in urban stormwater runoff, which lead to non-point source contamination of water environment around cities, are of great concern. Lignocellulose fiber filters have potential to treat urban stormwater runoff because they are cheap and environmentally friendly, and can effectively remove particulate pollutants. However, the fiber filters alone cannot sufficiently remove soluble pollutants including heavy metals, nitrogen compounds, and phosphate. In this study, techniques for chemical modification of lignocellulose fiber filter were implemented to enhance the treatment efficiency of soluble pollutants in urban stormwater runoff. Using these chemically modified fiber filters together with polymer filter media, a new treatment device was examined to control the pollutants in first flush of stormwater. The results indicated that the filters incorporated into the treatment unit allow the control of urban stormwater runoff with minimal cost and high efficiency

Notes: This study focuses on the development of novel catalysts for simultaneous adsorption andoxidation of micropollutants in aqueous phase. Molecular catalysts were physically immobilized onthe surface or pore of amberlite IRA-400 or powdered activated carbon (PAC). Comparison ofdifferent combinations of catalysts and adsorbents showed that the Fe(III)-TsPc combined withamberlite had the highest removal efficiency for target compounds. Although the catalyst wasimmobilized by electrical attraction, no dissociation of catalyst from adsorbent occurred during thetests. Amberlite-supported Fe(III)-TsPc shows more than 98% removal efficiency in 40 min. Inhomogenous system (suspension of Fe(III)-TsPc in aqueous solution), the oxidation reaction occurredonly in acidic conditions (pH ~ 4.5) and the catalyst deactivation rate was fast. On the contrary, thereaction was fast in neutral pH and catalytic deactivation was negligible using theamberlite-supported Fe(III)-TsPc

Notes: The creation of large impervious surface in urban and urbanizing areas have led tosignificant impacts on local climate, which is commonly known as urban heat island (UHI). In thisstudy, porous pavements made of recycled sludge were examined as a way to control UHI by loweringthe surface temperature. A novel image analysis technique was applied to quantify cooling effect ofporous pavement materials without and with water. Although the porous pavement itself has smallerheat capacity than the natural soil, supplying water to the pavement decreased its surface temperature. At its highest point, the difference in surface temperatures without and with water was more than 10oC. The water was supplied either from the top of the pavement or from the bottom of the pavementusing the capillary effects. In both cases, pavement temperature was effectively lowered. The coolingeffect of pavement by surface coating using epoxy-based polymers was negligible because surfacepores were blocked. Field tests also confirmed the cooling potential of porous pavements
