    Notes: Abstract Preconcentration of phenolic compounds was carried out with Empore C18 membrane disks, which were eluted with a closed-vessel microwave extraction system. The optimum microwave-elution conditions were obtained by optimizing the elution solvent, elution temperature, duration of elution and volume of elution solvent. The recoveries of eleven phenolic compounds spiked at 10 and 500 μg/L levels into water, using the optimum conditions, were all above 85% with relative standard deviations between 4.0 and 10.0%, except for phenol and 4-nitrophenol. Extraction of an industrial waste water sample suspected of containing phenolic compounds by SPE-CVME showed similar recoveries of phenol (the only phenolic compound detected) when compared with LLE and C18 SPE cartridge techniques. Analysis of phenolic compounds was carried out using liquid chromatography coupled to a UV detection system.

    Notes: Abstract The effect of varying SDS concentration in a micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatographic system (MECC) is investigated. In addition, the introduction of γ-cyclodextrin as modifier to the electrophoretic medium, containing SDS and a phosphate-borate buffer, is shown to give satisfactory separation of the seven selected PAHs. The separation efficiency is increased with the addition of γ-cyclodextrin.

    Notes: Abstract A rapid and simple method is described for the quantitative determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in aqueous environmental samples. A microscale on-line supercritical fluid extraction-supercritical fluid chromatography system using carbon dioxide is employed. The extract is analysed using capillary supercritical fluid chromatography with UV detection. Detection was carried out at 254 nm. An extraction efficiency of as high as 91% was obtained for the PAHs.

    Notes: Abstract The sulphur dioxide content and thermal stability of the quinol-SO2 clathrate have been studied by thermogravimetric analysis (TG), its derivative (DTG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). These analyses demonstrated the thermal recoverability of the quinol from the clathrate and hence its potential use as a sponge for SO2 present in the environment as a pollutant. Similarly, Bu4N+I- was found to occlude NO2 and SO2 at 50°C in solution.

    Notes: Abstract The aim of this study is to develop a catalytic method which has advantages over current method to detoxify and degrade environmentally harmful polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). A variety of catalysts have been employed in a preliminary study on 1,4-dibromobenzene and 4,4′-dibromobiphenyl which may be considered to represent simple analogues of PCBs. The most satisfactory catalysts are those involving [Pd(dppf)] [dppf = 1,1′-bis(diphenylphosphino)ferrocene], generated in situ from PdCl2(dppf) or Pd(dppf)2. In the presence of the reducing reagent, namely NaBH4, debromination has been achieved at relative mild conditions with high product yields (〉 70%). Thus, our results indicate the possibility of dechlorination of PCBs with such catalysts.

    Notes: Abstract The applications of Freon-22 (R22) as a mobile phase and as a modifier in supercritical fluid chromatography were investigated. For the purpose of this investigation, the separation of eleven phenols listed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency as priority pollutants was studied. It was found that the use of neat R22 greatly reduced the retention times of the phenols compared with the use of neat carbon dioxide as mobile phase. Satisfactory separation of all the eleven phenols could be achieved using 5% R22 as modifier in carbon dioxide. The promising results obtained in this preliminary investigation indicate the potential for the use of R22 in supercritical fluid separation processes.

    Notes: Epinine was detected with a simple and disposable carbon fiber flow electrode after being separated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). An alumina adsorption procedure was used for the extraction of epinine from urine samples. The extraction recoveries at 1, 3, and 6 μg/mL epinine concentration levels were 66.9 ± 3.7, 65.6 ± 3.3, and 67.0 ± 3.4%, respectively (n = 5). Linear responses to epinine in urine were obtained over the range of 0 to 10 μg/mL. The detection limit (signal-to-noise ratio = 5/1) for epinine in urine was 15 ng/mL.

    Notes: Micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) was evaluated as a new technique for the rapid estimation of octanol-water partition coefficient (logKow). Retention measurements for more than 40 reference pesticides with varied structural characteristics and hydrophobicity were carried out in two MEKC systems, based on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) and sodium cholate (SC), respectively. To enable an accurate determination of capacity factors in the SC-MEKC system, cypermethrin (a synthetic pyrethroid insecticide) was utilized instead of Sudan III as the SC micelle tracer, since a few highly hydrophobic pesticides were found to elute after Sudan III. The linear correlation between logarithmic capacity factor (logk̃′1) and logKow in the two systems was examined. It was found that, under the typical buffer condition (10 mM sodium phosphate with 60 mM surfactant, pH 7.0), the SDS-MEKC system provided a somewhat wider dynamic range for hydrophobicity (logKow from -1.0 to 4.5). However, the correlation of logk̃′i with logKow was not very high when all the reference pesticides were included in one single calibration set. For the SC-MEKC system, the dynamic range for logKow was in the range of 1.0-5.5, and a good linear correlation existed between logk̃′i and logKow, even when all reference pesticides were incorporated into a single calibration group. By comparing the regression line of the reference pesticides with that of a group of simple aromatic derivatives, it was discovered that molecular size and functionality posed a less significant effect on the measurement of logKow in the SC-MEKC system than in the SDS-MEKC system. Thus, SC-MEKC shall be the system of choice for the estimation of logKow. The typical error on logKow determination using the current MEKC technique was within 0.5 units, suggesting that MEKC can be a valuable complement to reversed phase - high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) for the indirect determination of logKow. Besides maintaining all the advantages of the HPLC approach, the MEKC technique showed some unique benefits, such as better inter-column reproducibility, higher throughput, and less handling of toxic pesticides and solvents.
