Notes: We present a new dynamical derivation of the approximation used by Thompson, Schweizer, and Chandler and by Høye and Stell for the frequency dependent polarizability of a quantum fluid with harmonically bound dipole moments; the Drude model. The derivation is the same for classical and quantum liquids—as is of course the result which agrees with that of these authors. We then refine the theory by taking account of the limited number of energy levels available, i.e., we replace the harmonic approximation by a two level approximation, for the target atom. This leads to a prefactor ω0I/ω0 in the line shift of an impurity atom in a fluid computed by Chandler, Schweitzer, and Wolynes: ω0 and ω0I being the characteristic frequencies of the fluid and impurity atoms, respectively. This factor improves the agreement between theory and experiment, especially those of Nowak and Bernstein on benzene in argon and some other liquids. We also compute the line shapes of the impurity atom by Monte Carlo simulations and obtain reasonable agreement with experimental observations.

Notes: We consider a general d-dimensional quantum system of non-interacting particles in a very large (formally infinite) container. We prove that, in equilibrium, the fluctuations in the density of particles in a subdomain Λ of the container are described by a large deviation function related to the pressure of the system. That is, untypical densities occur with a probability exponentially small in the volume of Λ, with the coefficient in the exponent given by the appropriate thermodynamic potential. Furthermore, small fluctuations satisfy the central limit theorem. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The properties of a partially ionized plasma in a long cylindrical tube subject to a uniform axial electric field are investigated. The plasma is maintained by an external ionizing source balanced by bulk and surface recombinations. Collisions between neutrals, whose density greatly exceeds the density of charged particles, and of neutrals with ions, are sufficiently effective for their velocity distribution to be close to a Maxwellian with the same uniform temperature, independent of the external field. The behavior of the plasma is described by a collisional two-fluid scheme with charge neutrality in the interior of the tube. Approximate nonlinear equations for the hydrodynamical moments are obtained from a Boltzmann equation in which electron–neutral, electron–ion, and electron–electron collisions are all important. It is found that under certain circumstances the current and the temperature of the electrons undergo a drastic change, with hysteresis, as the electric field is varied. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The structure of the self-consistent electromagnetic fields, E, B, and one-particle distribution functions, fs, of a stationary dissipative unbounded S-species plasma, which satisfy a system of Maxwell–Vlasov–Fokker–Planck–Boltzmann equations with velocity-independent (effective) dissipation coefficients and applied constant electric field E, is studied. It is proven that when the plasma is invariant along the direction of E, then (a) the fs are given by S drifting Maxwell–Boltzmann distributions, with densities satisfying self-consistent Poisson–Boltzmann equations of the type first considered by Bennett for S=2; (b) all smooth radial current profiles with normalized particle densities satisfy a generalized Bennett relation; (c) Bennett's current profile is the only fully conformally invariant one; (d) there exist other radial solutions with profiles different from Bennett's.

Notes: We study the time evolution of the wave function of a particle bound by an attractive δ-function potential when it is subjected to time-dependent variations of the binding strength (parametric excitation). The simplicity of this model permits certain nonperturbative calculations to be carried out analytically both in one and three dimensions. Thus the survival probability of bound state |θ(t)|2, following a pulse of strength r and duration t, behaves as |θ(t)|2−|θ(∞)|2∼t−α, with both θ(∞) and α depending on r. On the other hand, a sequence of short pulses produces an exponential decay over an intermediate time scale. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.
