    Notes: Previous measurements in a two-stream plane mixing layer have shown that the mean streamwise vorticity decays monotonically with downstream distance such that it is absent in the far-field (self-similar) region [J. H. Bell and R. D. Mehta, J. Fluid Mech. 239, 213 (1992); AIAA J. 28, 2034 (1990)]. It was not clear at that time if this measured decay reflected the diffusion of the instantaneous streamwise vorticity or was a result of increasing vortex meander within the mixing layer. The present experimental study was conducted in order to determine the existence of streamwise vortex meander in a mixing layer, and if present, its significance on the measured properties. The dependence of the velocity cross-correlation on the fixed probe location was shown to be a good indicator of the stationarity of the streamwise vortex location. The cross-correlation measurements obtained here indicate that spanwise meander is negligible, although transverse apparent meander (normal to the plane of the mixing layer) was indicated. The transverse meander, exemplified by the elliptical shape of the mean streamwise vorticity contours, was expected, since the streamwise vorticity in the braid region is essentially inclined, with respect to the streamwise direction. These conclusions were supported by results of estimated spanwise profiles of the transverse velocity component. The balance of evidence suggests that the measured mean streamwise vorticity decay is representative of the decay of the vorticity rather than an artifact of meander.

    Notes: In the present study, errors in using Taylor's hypothesis to transform measurements obtained in a temporal (or phase) frame onto a spatial one were evaluated. For the first time, phase-averaged ("real'') spanwise and streamwise vorticity data measured on a three-dimensional grid were compared directly to those obtained using Taylor's hypothesis. The results show that even the qualitative features of the spanwise and streamwise vorticity distributions given by the two techniques can be very different. This is particularly true in the region of the spanwise roller pairing. The phase-averaged spanwise and streamwise peak vorticity levels given by Taylor's hypothesis are typically lower (by up to 40%) compared to the real measurements. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Description: Spanwise scale changes of the streamwise vortical structure in a plane forced mixing layer have been investigated through direct measurements. Detailed three-dimensional phase-averaged measurements were obtained of the spanwise and streamwise vorticity in a forced mixing layer undergoing three spanwise roller pairings. A two-stream mixing layer with a velocity ratio (U2/U1) of 0.6 and laminar initial boundary layers was generated in a mixing-layer wind tunnel. Acoustic forcing, consisting of a fundamental roll-up frequency and its first, second and third subharmonics, was used to phase-lock the initial development and the first three pairings of the spanwise rollers. Although the overall spanwise scale remained unchanged through the first two roller pairings, some (cyclic) ‘readjustment’ of the weaker streamwise structures was observed. The overall spanwise scale doubled during the third roller pairing. For the first time, one of the proposed mechanisms for the scale change has been identified and its details measured directly. The weakest (positive) streamwise vortex is split into two and displaced by stronger neighbouring (negative) vortices. These two vortices (of the same sign) then merge together, thus doubling the spanwise scale and circulation of the resulting streamwise vortical structure. © 1995, Cambridge University Press.     Description: Detailed three-dimensional phase-averaged measurements of the spanwise and streamwise vorticity formation and evolution in a forced mixing layer have been obtained. A plane two-stream mixing layer with a velocity ratio (U2/U1) of 0.6, a maximum Reynolds number (Reδ) of about 3150 and laminar initial boundary layers was generated in a mixing layer wind tunnel. Acoustic forcing, consisting of a fundamental roll-up frequency and its subharmonic, was used to phase-lock the initial development and first pairing of the spanwise vortical structures. For the first time, phase-averaged measurements of all three velocity components have been obtained on a three-dimensional grid, yielding the spanwise and streamwise vorticity distributions without invoking Taylor's hypothesis. The phase-averaged results show that the streamwise vorticity first appears in the form of 'ribs' just upstream of the first spanwise vortex roll-up. At the same time, the first spanwise roller becomes kinked, thus also contributing to the streamwise vorticity. As a result, in cross-stream cuts through the spanwise rollers, the streamwise vorticity appears in a 'three-tier' arrangement with opposite-signed vorticity in the centre. In terms of phase-averaged quantities, the maximum streamwise vorticity in the initial ribs is equivalent to about 10-15% of the peak spanwise vorticity and the streamwise rib circulation is equivalent to about 5-10% of the spanwise circulation. Further downstream, the peak streamwise vorticity decreases with increasing distance, while the average circulation remains approximately constant. Downstream of the pairing, the streamwise vorticity levels in the spanwise rollers are reduced. However, the spanwise spacing of the streamwise vortices does not increase within the measurement domain. Phase-averaged Reynolds stress measurements show that relatively high stress levels (periodic and random) were generated in the cores of the spanwise vortices.

    Description: The objective of the current project was to experimentally investigate the structure and dynamics of the streamwise vorticity in a plane mixing layer. The first part of this research program was intended to clarify whether the observed decrease in mean streamwise vorticity in the far-field of mixing layers is due primarily to the 'smearing' caused by vortex meander or to diffusion. Two-point velocity correlation measurements have been used to show that there is little spanwise meander of the large-scale streamwise vortical structure. The correlation measurements also indicate a large degree of transverse meander of the streamwise vorticity which is not surprising since the streamwise vorticity exists in the inclined braid region between the spanwise vortex core regions. The streamwise convection of the braid region thereby introduces an apparent transverse meander into measurements using stationary probes. These results corroborated with estimated secondary velocity profiles in which the streamwise vorticity produces a signature which was tracked in time.

For the first time, phase-averaged measurements of all three velocity components have been obtained in both a mixing layer and a wake on three-dimensional grids, yielding the spanwise and streamwise vorticity distributions without invoking Taylor's hypothesis. Initially, two-frequency forcing was used to phase-lock the roll-up and first pairing of the spanwise vortical structures in a plane mixing layer. The objective of this study was to measure the near-field vortical structure morphology in a mixing layer with 'natural' laminar initial boundary layers. For the second experiment the second and third subharmonics of the fundamental roll-up frequency were added to the previous two-frequency forcing in order to phase-lock the roll-up and first three pairings of the spanwise rollers in the mixing layer. The objective of this study was to determine the details of spanwise scale changes observed in previous time-averaged measurements and flow visualization of unforced mixing layers. For the final experiment, single-frequency forcing was used to phase-lock the Karman vortex street in a plane wake developing from nominally two-dimensional laminar initial boundary layers. The objective of this study was to compare measurements of the three-dimensional structure in a wake developing from 'natural' initial boundary layers to existing models of wake vortical structure.
