Translated from Litologiya i Poleznye Iskopaemye, 2008, 5, 480-504, Lithology and Mineral Resources, 43(5), 429-453, https://doi.org/10.1134/S0024490208050027
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Twenty three groups of thermomineral springs in the eastern Chukotka with discharge temperature from 2 to 97°C and mineralization from 1.47 to 37.14 g/l are studied and compared with surface freshwater from their localities. dD and d18O values in surface waters vary from -121.4 to -89.5 per mil and from -16.4 to -11.1 per mil, respectively, while respective values in thermomineral waters range from -134.2 to -92.5 per mil and from -17.6 to -10.5 per mil. dD value in surface waters decreases from the east to the west, i.e. toward interior areas of the peninsula. Hydrothermal springs most depleted in deuterium (dD 〈 -120 per mil) are localized in the geodynamically active Kolyuchinskaya-Mechigmen Depression. According to the proposed formation model of Chukotka thermomineral waters their observed chemical and isotopic characteristics could result from mixing (in different proportions) of surface waters with the deep-sourced isotopically light mineralized component (dD = ca. -138 per mil, d18O = ca. -19 per mil, ? = from 9.5 to 14.7 g/l). The latter originates most likely from subpermafrost waters subjected to slight cryogenic metamorphism.

In:  Supplement to: Lavrushin, VYu; Dubinina, Elena O; Avdeenko, Anna S (2005): Isotopic composition of oxygen and hydrogen in mud-volcanic waters from Taman (Russia) and Kakhetia (Eastern Georgia). Translated from Litologiya i Poleznye Iskopaemye, 2005, 2, 143-158, Lithology and Mineral Resources, 40(2), 123-137, https://doi.org/10.1007/s10987-005-0014-z
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: d18O and dD values in mud-volcanic waters of the Taman Peninsula and Kakheti vary from +0.7 to +10.0 per mil and from -37 to -13 per mil, respectively. These values increase as the Greater Caucasus is approached. Increase in d18O and dD also positively correlates with fluid generation temperatures based on hydrochemical geothermometers. This is accompanied by changes in chemical composition of waters, in which concentrations of alkali metals, HCO3- ion, and boron increase, while concentrations of halogen ions (Cl-, Br-, J-) decrease. Changes in isotopic composition of water are also accompanied by increase of d13C in methane and decrease of d11B in clays. Analysis of formal models of evolution of isotopic composition of mud-volcanic waters shows that mud volcanoes are recharged by freshened water from the Maikop paleobasin with inferred isotopic composition of dD~-40 per mil and d18O~-6 per mil. Based on this assumption, d18O and dD values observed in mud-volcanic waters can be explained not only by processes of distillation and condensation in a closed system, but also by combined processes of isotopic re-equilibration in the water-illite-methane system.

In:  Supplement to: Polyak, Boris G; Lavrushin, VYu; Inguaggiato, S; Kikvadze, O E (2011): Helium isotopes in gases of mineral waters in the Western Caucasus. Translated from Litologiya i Poleznye Iskopaemye, 2011, 6, 555-567, Lithology and Mineral Resources, 46(6), 495-506, https://doi.org/10.1134/S0024490211060113
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Helium isotope composition as an indicator of the mantle-derived component was studied in gases from mineral springs, stratal waters, and mud volcanoes developed west of the Teberda River valley (10 objects) and two springs in the central segment of the Greater Caucasus orogen between the active El'brus and Kazbek volcanoes. In the western segment of the orogen ratios of 3He/4He = R_corr vary from 46x10**-8 to 114x10**-8 (from 0.33 to 0.81 R_atm, where R_atm = 1.4x10**-6 is the atmospheric ratio). They are substantially lower relative to ratios in the vicinity of El'brus and Kazbek and close to those in samples from the central segment (from 70x10**-8 to 134x10**-8 (from 0.50 to 0.96 R_atm), as well as to ratios previously recorded in the Caucasian Mineral Waters (CMW) area. Moreover, concentration of 3He in them is notably higher than its crustal radiogenic level characteristic of mud volcanoes in the Taman Peninsula, where 3He/4He varies from 1.4x10**-8 to 2.8x10**-8 (from 0.01 to 0.02 R_atm). Nitrogen-methane gas from northern piedmonts of the western Caucasus also contains nonatmogenic components including radiogenic 40Ar (40Ar/36Ar = 900), excessive nitrogen (~87% of total N2 concentration in sample) and mantle He. These data specify distribution of mantle derivates along the orogen strike and age of intrusive magmatic activity in its different segments.

In:  Supplement to: Lavrushin, VYu; Gruzdev, A R (2012): The salt composition of rivers in Wrangel Island. Translated from Litologiya i Poleznye Iskopaemye, 2012, 1, 3-20, Lithology and Mineral Resources, 47(1), 1-17, https://doi.org/10.1134/S0024490211060101
    Publication Date: 2023-03-16
Description: Pioneer information about chemical composition of river waters in the Wrangel Island has been obtained. It is shown that water composition reflects the lithogeochemical specifics of primary rocks and ore mineralization. In contrast to many areas of the Russian Far North river waters of the island are characterized by elevated background value of total mineralization (i.e., total dissolved solids, TDS) (0.3-2 g/l) and specific chemical type (SO4-Ca-Mg). This is related to abundance of Late Carboniferous gypsiferous and dolomitic sequences in the mountainous area of the island. It has also been established that salt composition of some streams is appreciably governed by supergene alterations of sulfide mineralization associated with quartz-carbonate vein systems. They make up natural centers of surface water contamination. Waters in such streams are characterized by low pH values (2.4-5.5), high TDS (up to 6-23 g/l) and SO4-Mg composition. These waters are also marked by anomalously high concentrations of heavy and non-ferrous metals, as well as REE, U, and Th.
