Notes: Abstract The variations with time of the contact angle formed by molten pure aluminium or Al-Si alloys with single crystalline SiC were measured by the sessile drop method in a vacuum of 10−4 to 10−5 Pa at temperatures ranging from 933 to 1200 K. In the Al/SiC system, a “non-wetting-wetting” transition was observed at a temperature that decreases as time increases. After holding times of about 2 h, contact angles were stabilized to acute angles even at the aluminium melting point. Although additions of silicon to aluminium were in such amounts as to prevent Al4C3 formation at the interface, wettability in both pure Al/SiC and Al-Si alloys/SiC systems was not observed to differ appreciably.

Notes: Abstract The variability of the cocoa (Theobroma cacao) nuclear genome was investigated. A total of 203 cocoa clones was surveyed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) using four restriction endonuclease and 31 seed cDNA probes. A high level of polymorphism has been found. This study points to a structuring of the species that fits with the distinction between the Criollo and Forastero populations. These results combined with previously obtained nuclear rDNA and mtDNA data allow us to propose new hypotheses on the origin and evolution of the different cocoa populations.

Notes: Abstract The variability of cocoa (Theobroma cacao) cytoplasmic genomes has been investigated. A total of 177 cocoa clones was surveyed for restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) in chloroplast DNA and in mitochondrial DNA using two restriction endonucleases and various heterologous cytoplasmic probes. A high level of polymorphism was found for the mitochondrial genome. This study points up a structuring of the species that fits with the distinction between the Criollo and Forastero populations. In contrast to all previous analyses, a higher level of polymorphism is found among the Criollo clones while the Forastero clones form quite a homogeneous group.

Notes: Abstract A linkage map of the cocoa genome comprising 193 loci has been constructed. These loci consist of 5 isozymes, 101 cDNA/RFLPs, 4 loci from genes of known function, 55 genomic DNA/RFLPs and 28 RAPDs. A population of 100 individuals derived from a cross between two heterozygous genotypes was used. Segregation analyses were performed with the JoinMap program. Ten linkage groups, which putatively correspond to the ten gametic chromosomes of cocoa, were identified. The map covers a total length of 759 cM with a 3.9 cM average distance between 2 markers. A small fraction (9%) of the markers deviated significantly from the expected Mendelian ratios.

Notes: Abstract Compocasting experiments were conducted to investigate the feasibility of the process as applied to the AZ91 D magnesium alloy-SiC particles system. Processing-macro/ microstructure relationships were examined. Three temperature-time processing sequences were investigated: stirring temperature maintained above liquidus; stirring temperature in the semi-solid temperature range; and lastly, an imposed temperature rise above the liquidus after stirring in the mushy zone. Stirring temperature and particle size significantly affect spatial particle distribution and porosity level. The easy incorporation and even dispersion of particles in the matrix suggest good wetting of SiC particles by the magnesium matrix. Impact fracture surfaces show strong bonding at the particle/matrix interface. A reaction takes place at the matrix/particle interface whilst stirring at temperatures above the liquidus. Reaction products have been identified. Finally, the mechanical properties of a compocast ingot which was extruded have been studied and are reported. This work clearly points out that there is a preferred procedure to follow during compocasting to obtain an optimum microstructure. The procedure is to add the reinforcing materials to the semi-solid alloy followed by stirring above the liquidus temperature.

Notes: Abstract The characteristics of the Al/SiC interface play a critical role in controlling the properties of SiC-reinforced aluminium composites and aluminium-brazed SiC ceramic joints. Recently, a detailed investigation on the wettability of SiC single crystals by aluminium and several of its alloys was conducted. In order to understand further the nature of the Al/SiC interface, high resolution and conventional transmission electron microscope techniques have now been used to investigate its microchemistry and microstructure. The results revealed the coexistence of two polytype structures, rhombohedral and hexagonal, in the SiC single crystal structure. Aluminium carbide (Al4C3) and silicon were the reaction products found at the Al/SiC interface. From diffraction patterns, epitaxial orientation relationships between the SiC substrate and Al4C3, Si were determined.

Notes: Abstract Previous investigations of phase equilibria in the ternary system Al-C-Si have shown that silicon carbide is attacked by pure aluminium at temperatures higher or equal to 923±3 K and up to about 1600 K, according to the chemical reaction: 4Al+3SiC ↔ Al4C3+3Si In the present work, a study has been carried out to obtain more detailed information on the mechanism and kinetics of this reaction. For that purpose, 6H silicon carbide platelets with broad Si (0 0 0 1) and C (0 0 0 ¯1) faces were isothermally heated at 1000 K in a large excess of liquid aluminium. Characterization of the resulting samples by Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the reaction proceeds in both faces via a dissolution-precipitation mechanism. However, the polarity of the substrate surface strikingly influences the rate at which silicon carbide decomposes: dissolution starts much more rapidly on the Si face than on the C face, but, while a barrier layer of aluminium carbide is formed on the Si face protecting it against further attack, the major part of the C face remains directly exposed to liquid aluminium and thus may continue to dissolve at a low but constant rate up to complete decomposition of the α-SiC crystal.

Notes: Abstract The genetic structure of 175 genotypes of Theobroma cacao L. was investigated using 27 RFLP/cDNA loci. The number of alleles per locus was never higher than four and a high genetic diversity was found. Criollo genotypes appeared differentiated from Forastero genotypes. A deficiency of heterozygotes was found in all populations and some alleles were fixed in some populations. Within population gene diversity was high. When four morphological groups were considered, Upper Amazon Forastero was the most polymorphic and diverse population. Almost all the alleles of the whole species could be found within this group. Observed heterozygosity was the highest within Criollo and Trinitario populations but a certain proportion of homozygous genotypes was present in all groups.
