    Description: The X-33 flight visualization effort has resulted in the integration of high-resolution terrain data with vehicle position and attitude data for planned flights of the X-33 vehicle from its launch site at Edwards AFB, California, to landings at Michael Army Air Field, Utah, and Maelstrom AFB, Montana. Video and Web Site representations of these flight visualizations were produced. In addition, a totally new module was developed to control viewpoints in real-time using a joystick input. Efforts have been initiated, and are presently being continued, for real-time flight coverage visualizations using the data streams from the X-33 vehicle flights. The flight visualizations that have resulted thus far give convincing support to the expectation that the flights of the X-33 will be exciting and significant space flight milestones... flights of this nation's one-half scale predecessor to its first single-stage-to-orbit, fully-reusable launch vehicle system.

    Description: This document is the final report by the Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) on contracted support provided to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) under Contract NAS8-99060, 'Space Transportation Systems Technologies'. This contract, initiated by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) on February 8, 1999, was focused on space systems technologies that directly support NASA's space flight goals. It was awarded as a Cost-Plus-Incentive-Fee (CPIF) contract to SAIC, following a competitive procurement via NASA Research Announcement, NRA 8-21. This NRA was specifically focused on tasks related to Reusable Launch Vehicles (RLVs). Through Task Area 3 (TA-3), "Other Related Technology" of this NRA contract, SAIC extensively supported the Space Transportation Directorate of MSFC in effectively directing, integrating, and setting its mission, operations, and safety priorities for future RLV-focused space flight. Following an initially contracted Base Year (February 8, 1999 through September 30, 1999), two option years were added to the contract. These were Option Year 1 (October 1, 1999 through September 30, 2000) and Option Year 2 (October 1, 2000 through September 30, 2001). This report overviews SAIC's accomplishments for the Base Year, Option Year 1, and Option Year 2, and summarizes the support provided by SAIC to the Space Transportation Directorate, NASA/MSFC.

    Description: The Tethered Satellite System (TSS) will operate from the Space Shuttle as an earth-orbiting facility that will permit tethered deployment of numerous types of payloads to altitudes both above and below that of the Shuttle. The TSS has evolved from initial studies, beginning in the sixties, to a cooperative development program that is currently being carried out by NASA and the National Space Plan of Italy's CNR. This cooperative agreement between NASA and CNR includes system development and science instrumentation for the first mission, and planning for two additional missions. This paper will (1) discuss predevelopment activities, (2) review the development approach and management relationships between NASA and CNR, (3) describe the current hardware/software configuration and functional interfaces, (4) discuss the mission profile and flight operations planning, and (5) overview science experiment status/plans for the first TSS mission.

    Description: The Tethered Satellite System (TSS) is a cooperative space system and science development activity being carried out by the U.S. and Italy. The TSS will involve an instrument-laden satellite that can be deployed from the cargo bay of the Shuttle Orbiter using a long tether to altitudes both above and below that of the Orbiter. This paper discusses the predevelopment activities, development approach and management relationships, current hardware and software designs and interfaces, overall science experiment status and plans, and mission operation planning for the first TSS mission.
