    Notes: Summary Serum intact parathyroid hormone (PTH), 25 hydroxyvitamin D(25OHD), 1,25 dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25(OH)2D), albumin, and ionized calcium were measured in 61 Chinese female patients with hip fracture and 61 control subjects. Hip fracture patients had low albumin, ionized calcium, and 250HD levels. Serum PTH and 1,25 (OH)2D values were not different between the two groups. We conclude that although 250HD level in hip fracture patients is low, there is no evidence of secondary hyperparathyroidism, suggesting that the low 250HD levels may be a secondary phenomenon in response to the fracture.

    Notes: Computer simulations of neon dissolved in a variety of organic liquids are used to explore the origins of solvent-induced changes in the neon shielding parameter. Relying on recent theoretical calculations, it is demonstrated that short-range (van der Waals) interactions between the rare gas atom and solvent molecules are the predominant source of the shielding parameter changes. The treatment used leads to calculated solvent-induced changes for solvents as diverse as water and hexane that are in good agreement with experimental observations. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The temperature characteristics of bipolar cascade lasers operating up to 80 °C with room temperature, continuous-wave differential slope efficiencies of 93%, are reported. The continuous-wave characteristic lasing threshold temperature, T0, of the device is found to be 103 K for heatsink temperatures below 40 °C, dropping to 56 K for heatsink temperatures in the range 50–80 °C. Two separate regions are found to exist for the characteristic temperature of the differential slope efficiency, T1. The temperature of the topside metal contact versus bias was measured directly using a microthermocouple probe. Finite element modeling showed good agreement with measured surface temperatures. The simulations indicate that, prior to the onset of lasing in the bottom active region, nonradiative recombination heating in the bottom active region significantly heats the (lasing) top active region, leading to a reduction in the differential slope efficiency of the bipolar cascade laser. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: When 4 mg of testosterone (T) per kg food was given to 1-year-old protandrous male black porgy Acanthopagrus schlegeli for 7 months, gonadosomatic index was significantly higher than when the dose was 0.5 mg kg−1 food. Both doses of T prolonged the spawning season, and increased the number of spermiating fish and milt volume. Sperm concentrations were similar in spermiating black porgy from the treated and control groups. Low levels of oestradiol-17β were observed during the experimental period while elevated levels of plasma T were observed only in March in both control and T-treated groups. Significantly higher levels of plasma 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT) were observed in the 0.5- and 4.0-mg T-treated groups during the spawning season as compared to the control group. The present data suggest that both 0.5- and 4·0-mg T doses stimulate testicular weight, increase numbers of spermiating males and milt volume without affecting the sperm concentrations. Plasma 11-KT concentrations were elevated during T treatment and closely correlated with testicular development and spermiation.

    Notes: Abstract Genetic relatedness of 20 Salmonella isolates comprising 16 serotypes was analysed by restriction endonuclease digestion of the total DNA with six endonucleases individually. The rDNA fingerprints generated by EcoRI were more polymorphic, each serotype showed a unique fingerprint sharing several core (monomorphic) bands with several polymorphic bands. Eight characteristic NciI rDNA fingerprints were found. Similar rDNA RFLP patterns were observed in strains of Salmonella from different serotypes.

    Notes: Abstract Biochemical markers of bone formation (bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin) and bone resorption (hydroxyproline excretion and bone isoenzyme of acid phosphatase) were measured in 30 patients (15 M and 15 F) with hip fracture and 30 healthy subjects matched for age and sex. Bone isoenzyme of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRACP) was measured by a recently developed specific immunoassay. Serum osteocalcin concentration and bone-specific alkaline phosphatase activity were significantly lower and serum TRACP concentration and urinary hydroxyproline excretion were elevated in patients compared with healthy subjects. We suggest that there is reduced bone formation and increased bone resorption in patients with hip fracture.

The following health consequences of vertebral deformity in Hong Kong elderly Chinese men and women were studied: the prevalence of back pain, disability due to back pain, and low morale. Lateral X-ray films were taken of the thoracic and lumbar spine of 796 community-dwelling Chinese subjects (396 men, 400 women) (aged 70–79). Subjects with one or more definitely deformed vertebra (reduction in vertebral height 3 SD or more below the mean) were classified as definite cases, those with one or more mildly deformed vertebra (reduction in vertebral height 2–2.99 SD below the mean) as mild cases, and the rest as controls. The prevalence and consequences of back pain were measured by a standardized questionnaire, and morale was measured by the Geriatric Morale Score. The relative risk (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of having back pain and being depressed were calculated by logistic regression. Classifications included 16% of men and 30% of women as definite cases, 37% of men and 35% of women as mild cases, and 47% of men and 35% of women as controls. The relative risk (RR) of back pain was 2.3 (95% CI 1.4–3.9) (P 〈 0.05) in women with definite deformity and 1.5 (95% CI 0.9–2.5) (P 〉 0.05) in women with mild deformity, as compared with controls. Sixty-four percent of all men had back pain. This prevalence was much higher than figures obtained in a previous survey on low back pain. The prevalence of back pain did not differ by deformity status, but more men with vertebral deformity were on analgesic. There was no significant association between disability due to back pain and vertebral deformity in women. The RR for having a low morale score (of 5 and below) was 2.3 (95% CI 1.3–4.1) (P 〈 0.05) in women with mild deformity; men with vertebral deformity did not have a low morale. It was concluded that vertebral deformity was associated with significant back pain and psychological morbidity in elderly Chinese women. Although men with vertebral deformity did not report more back pain, more were on analgesics than controls.
