    Notes: Abstract Particle trajectories of 6.4μm Latex spheres were recorded by video, both near an isolated blue mussel, Mytilus edulis, gill filament and, in place of an intact interfilamentary canal, in a model canal of width 200, 100 or 70μm, formed by a transparent plate positioned next to a gill filament. Each arrangement was placed in a 2 x 10 x 10 cm test vessel filled with seawater. Serotonin (nerve-transmitter) stimulation was used to activate lateral cilia and to either lock latero-frontal cirri at the end of an active stroke (10-5 M), or to activate them (10-6 M), yielding lateral cilia beat frequencies of 19 and 16 Hz, respectively. With latero-frontal cirri locked, image analysis of particle tracks gave maximum velocities of ca. 2.9±0.2mm s-1 close to the tips of lateral cilia, for both isolated filament and model canal cases. Experimental velocity profiles along the 200-μm wide model canal were recorded and used as good approximations to the fluid velocity because of the low Reynolds number. A two-dimensional steady model was proposed for the gill pump, assumed to only comprise lateral cilia. This model was solved numerically for the experimental model, canal in the vessel and the results showed satisfactory agreement with experimental volocity profiles from particle tracks. The numerical approach was also applied to a model of a single interfilamentary canal in the vessel. The resulting mean velocity in the canal was 1.70 mm s-1, but the resistance to flow in the model was less than that in an intact mussel gill. Video graphs of particle tracks indicated that active latero-frontal cirri play a role in the transfer of particles from through current to frontal current, probably by means of a strong interaction through the motion of intervening fluid rather than through a direct physical contact. M. edulis specimens used in the present study were collected in 1990 at Helsingør and in 1991 at Kerteminde, Denmark.

    Notes: Abstract Microscope video graphs of particle paths near one-filament-thick mussel gill preparations, stimulated with a nerve transmitter (10−6 M serotonin which restores normal ciliary activity), were used to disclose the capture of 6 μm algal cells. Suspended algal cells carried with the water were stopped for a while at the entrance to the interfilament gap by the action of the latero-frontal cirri (Ifc), and transferred to the frontal side of the filament to be transported towards the marginal food groove. The event of transfer took place during approximately a time interval of 1150 to 1/25 s. To gain a better understanding of the capture mechanism and retention efficiency versus particle size, the flow through and around the Ifc was theoretically estimated. Normally beating Ifc create periodic, unsteady, three-dimensional flows at the entrance to the interfilament canal. During the active beat most of the water is deflected to flow around the branching cilia of the Ifc while some of the water is strained by these. Large particles (〉 4 μm) are stopped and transferred to the frontal current, whereas smaller particles either follow the flow around the Ifc and escape or they are stopped by the branching cilia.

    Notes: Abstract In November 1973 the benthic macrofauna of two shallow-water areas in the lower Sheepscot River estuary (New England, USA) was quantitatively sampled. Numerical classification of the data, in both the normal and inverse modes, produced 4 site-groups and 7 species-groups. Each site-group was characterized by at least one of the species-groups. The fauna of the site-groups differed in several community parameters, particularly the patterns of dominance, but it was not possible to correlate these differences with any of the several extrinsic factors measured. A factor, or factors, related to water-column stability is the probable overriding ecological determinant of the observed community patterns. Comparisons with an earlier investigation in 1955 demonstrate dramatic changes in density, dominance and species composition.

    Notes: Abstract It has been shown previously that externally added glycine betaine is accumulated in Escherichia coli in response to the external osmotic strength. Here we have shown, by using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and radiochemical methods, that E. coli growing in a glucose-mineral medium of elevated osmotic strength generated with NaCl, had the same capacity to accumulate proline betaine and glycine betaine. Its capacity to accumulate γ-butyrobetaine was, however, 40 to 50% lower. Accordingly, externally added proline betaine and glycine betaine stimulated aerobic growth of osmotically stressed cells equally well, and they were more osmoprotective than γ-butyrobetaine. In cells grown at an osmotic strength of 0.64, 1.01, or 1.47 osmolal, respectively, the molal cytoplasmic concentration of the two former betaines corresponded to 29, 38, or 58% of the external osmotic strength. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy revealed that trehalose and glutamic acid were the only species of organic osmolytes accumulated in significant amounts in cells grown under osmotic stress in glucosemineral medium without betaines. Their combined molal concentration in the cytoplasm of cells grown at 1.01 osmolal corresponded to 27% of the external osmotic strength.

    Notes: Abstract High-T c superconducting films of YBa2Cu3Ox on sapphire with an additional buffer layer of strontium titanate (actually, on heterostructures (100)SrTiO3/(001)YBa2Cu3Ox/(100)CeO2/(1102)Al2O3) are obtained by laser deposition, and their superconducting characteristics are investigated. It is shown that that buffering the sapphire by a strontium titanate film can raise the critical temperature of the YBa2Cu3Ox films by two degrees and give a severalfold increase in the critical current density.

    Notes: A formalism for deriving electrostatic potentials in crystals is presented, with emphasis on the choice of origin and the determination of the mean inner potential. Conditions for applying the conventional origin chosen for isolated molecules are specified. The formalism is applied to orthoboric acid, and maps of the electrostatic potentials are presented. Extinction appears to be a severe problem in mapping electrostatic potentials, and its effects are investigated with a multipole expansion of the electron density. The effects of thermal motion are seen to be small at points far from the atomic core regions.
