Notes: It is generally necessary in 3D scanning to divide a wrap-around object into several regions, each of which is measured individually. A series of pre-processing procedures must be implemented to prepare the data for use for surface reconstruction. Registration is a procedure for unifying the coordinate systems for multiple sets of scan data. Three registration algorithms, 3 points to 3 points, 3 spheres to 3 spheres and 3 planes to 3 planes, are proposed to suit different applications. Data merging is a procedure for removing overlapping data for multiple sets of scan data and for merging them into one set. A data search algorithm, based on triangulation, is com-bined with a few merging rules to merge the data in terms of different needs. Several experimental results are presented to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed algorithm.

Notes: An iterative process based upon a hybrid ‘residual force’ method is presented for solving elasto-plastic soil-structure interaction problems. In this approach the soil and the structure are treated as separate bodies and related only by compatibility of displacements and equilibrium of forces at the soil-structure interface. This scheme enables a significant improvement in numerical stability and rate of convergence over the conventional initial stress method. It is also shown that various interface conditions such as shear failure, slip and breakaway, and frictional and dilatant behaviour can be readily accounted for. Some practical aspects associated with the proposed scheme are emphasized for a number of numerical examples.

Notes: The dynamic mechanical properties, transition behavior, and morphology of polycarbonate (PC)-polyurethane (PU) semi-interpenetrating polymer networks (semi-IPNs) and linear blends were studied by means of Rheovibron, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Two glass transition temperatures corresponding to polycarbonate and polyurethane were observed and microphase separation was further evident with TEM. In PC/PU semi-IPNs, two glass transition temperatures were shifted inwardly indicating that the interpenetrating network of polyurethane increases the mutual miscibility of PC and PU. The average phase domain was 500Å in semi-IPNs and the phase domains were in the range 1000-6000 Å in linear blends of the corresponding polymers. The compatibilities of PC and PU were greatly influenced by the molecular weight of polyols in PU prepolymer and the ratio of NCO/OH; lower molecular weight polyols and higher NCO/OH ratio resulted in better compatibility, and finer phase domains in PC and PU linear blends and semi-IPNs.

Notes: The effects of plasma treatment conditions, such as supply power, treatment time, gases used in reactor, surface energy, water content, dialysis permeability, partition coefficient, diffusion coefficient, and free volume of Nylon 4 membranes, were studied. The solutes considered for dialysis system were NaCl, urea, and MgCl2. The permeabilities of NaCl and urea of membranes with plasma treated in argon at 80 W for 20 min are 5.57 × 10-5 and 5.89 × 10-5 cm2/min, respectively. Much higher permeabilities of NaCl and urea obtained by oxygen plasma-treated membranes under 20 W and for 20 min are 30.74 × 10-5 and 17.66 10-5 cm2/min, respectively, compared to that of untreated Nylon 4 membranes.

Notes: To improve the hydrophilicity and enhance the transport flux of nylon 4 membrane for dialysis, this study attempts to utilize blending nylon 4 with poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The instability of PVA in water can be obtained more easily than by other methods, such as chemical, γ-ray irradiated crosslinking, or high-temperature treatment used by previous researchers. The effects of maturation time of the casting solution, nylon 4/PVA ratios, and casting solvent compositions on esterification of PVA, salt permeability, water content, partition coefficient, diffusivity, and mechanical strength of membrances are studied. The membrane, prepared by casting solution of nylon 4/PVA = 9/1 wt % formic acid with 24-h maturation time, possesses permeabilities of NaCl and urea, 33.14 and 19.67 × 10-5 cm2/min, respectively.

Notes: To improve the performance of Nylon 4 membranes, this study attempts to utilize 60Co γ-ray irradiation which induces vinyl monomers to be grafted onto Nylon 4 membranes for desalination purposes. Sodium styrene sulfonate, acrylamide, vinylacetate, and styrene are the grafting monomers. The transport properties and mechanical strength of the γ-ray irradiation-grafted Nylon 4 membranes are studied. Both the water flux and salt rejection of sodium styrene sulfonate-grafted membranes increase significantly, compared to Huang's results. The other grafted membranes also show increased salt rejection.

Notes: By adjusting the casting conditions, the oxygen permeabilities of poly(4-methyl-pentene-1) (TPX) membranes prepared in this study are in the range of 2.91-7.14 × 10-9 cm3(STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg and permeability ratio of O2/N2 between 2.7 and 4.4. To increase O2—N2 selectivity, the vinylpyridine is γ-ray irradiation-grafted onto the substrate-TPX membrane. The factors that affect the structure and performance of the grafted membrane considered are: tightness of substrate, kind of solvent for grafting monomers, irradiation conditions, total irradiation dose, and operating temperature and pressure. The O2/N2 selectivities of grafted TPX membranes are significantly improved comparing to that of nongrafted TPX membranes. For example, an O2 permeability of 35.6 × 10-10 cm3(STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg and an O2/N2 permeability ratio of 7.5 for the grafted membrane can be obtained.

Notes: The effects of composition, molecular weight, and milling temperature on homogeneity, gas permeability, selectivity of oxygen/nitrogen, and mechanical strength of the TPX/siloxane blend membranes were studied. By adjusting the blending conditions and hence controlling the homogeneity, the gas permeability of TPX membrane was significantly improved without loss of oxygen/nitrogen selectivity. The oxygen permeability of 1.57 × 10-8 cm3 (STP) cm/cm2 s cm Hg and the oxygen/nitrogen permeation ratio of 6.92 can be obtained under the condition of TPX (MX-001)/siloxane (75,000 MW) = 9/1 at 65°C milling temperature. This membrane possesses 133 kg/cm2 tensile strength and 92% elongation. The morphology of the blend membranes was studied.

Notes: The effects of maturation time of casting solution and annealing conditions on reverse osmosis (RO) properties of nylon 4 membranes are studied. The effects of plasma treatment conditions, such as supply power, treatment time, and gases used in reactor, on the water contact angle, surface energy, water flux, and salt rejection of nylon 4 membranes are considered. The best results of 4.86 × 10-5 g/cm2 s of water flux with 74.2% of salt rejection for 1 wt % NaCl aqueous feed solution can be obtained in the conditions of plasma treatment for 80 W-3 min in a reactor with O2 on 25 wt % formic acid-4 h annealing nylon 4 membranes. The hydrophilic monomers, such as 1-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and acrylic acid (AA), are plasma deposited onto the chemical and/or plasma etched nylon 4 membranes to improve the salt rejection without decrease in water flux. The salt rejection of 90.9% and water flux of 3.64 × 10-5 g/cm2 s of the deposited membrane are obtained in the conditions of depositing AA monomer onto the substrate membrane which was previously treated with annealing followed with plasma etching.
