Notes: In this paper we investigate various properties of phase observables which could serve to determine the canonical phase observable among the family of all phase observables. We also show that any contractive weighted shift operator defines a unique phase observable, and we characterize phase observables that give the most accurate phase distribution in coherent states in the classical limit. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The notions of ideal, first kind, and repeatable measurements are reformulated and their relations analyzed within a systematic theory of measurement in quantum mechanics. This allows one to investigate new information theoretical characterizations of such measurements.

Notes: In this paper we characterize all the phase shift covariant normalized positive operator measures, i.e., phase observables, and we investigate some of their examples. We also characterize those phase observables which arise from the phase space observables as their polar coordinate angle margins. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The kind of information provided by a measurement is determined in terms of the correlation established between observables of the apparatus and the measured system. Using the framework of quantum measurement theory, necessary and sufficient conditions for a measurement interaction to produce strong correlations are given and are found to be related to properties of the final object and apparatus states. These general results are illustrated with reference to the standard model of the quantum theory measurement. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The set of effects is not a lattice with respect to its natural order. Projection operators do have the greatest lower bounds (and the least upper bounds) in that set, but there are also other (incomparable) effects which share this property. However, the coexistence, the commutativity, and the regularity of a pair of effects are not sufficient for the existence of their infima and suprema. The structure of the range of an observable (as a normalized POV measure) can vary from that of a commutative Boolean to a noncommutative non-Boolean subset of effects. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: It is shown within the Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics that the total noncommutativity of any two physical quantities is necessary for their satisfying the uncertainty relation or for their being complementary. The importance of these results is illustrated with the canonically conjugate position and momentum of a free particle and of a particle closed in a box.

Notes: Observables A and B satisfy the Heisenberg inequality if the product of their variances has a positive lower bound independent of the state of the system. In the Hilbert space formulation of quantum mechanics it is a consequence of the Schwarz inequality that the Heisenberg-type inequality Var(A,cursive-phi)⋅Var(B,cursive-phi)≥ (1)/(4) ||〈Acursive-phi||Bcursive-phi〉−〈Bcursive-phi||Acursive-phi〉||2 holds for any pair of observables A and B (represented as self-adjoint operators) and for any (vector) state (represented as a unit vector). If inf{||〈Acursive-phi||Bcursive-phi〉−〈Bcursive-phi||Acursive-phi〉|| ||cursive-phi∈dom(A) ∩dom(B)}≠0 then A and B satisfy the Heisenberg inequality. In the present paper the derivability of the Heisenberg-type inequality is analyzed within the general theoretical frame of a sum logic. It is shown that any real-valued non-negative function (A,α)→f(A,α) of observables A and of states α, which has a symmetry property f(A+B,α)+f(A−B,α)=2f(A,α)+2f(B,α) with respect to observables, satisfies the Heisenberg-type inequality f(A,α)⋅f(B,α)≥ (1)/(4) || f(A+B,α)−f(A,α)−f(B,α)||2 for all observables A and B and for all states α. The natural probabilistic realizations f1(A,α)=Exp(A2,α) and f2(A,α)=Var(A,α) of such functions are then analyzed. It turns out that only with the complex extension of the theory can the Heisenberg inequality be attained in the Hilbert space realization of the theory. This is used as an argument in favor of the complex field as the scalar field of quantum mechanics.

Notes: Observables of a physical system can be identified with convex mappings sending states into probability measures. The properties of these mappings determine the spectral properties of the observables. The mutually exclusive cases of injective and surjective mappings are characterized, and the convex structure of their ranges are investigated. In particular, the validity of the Krein–Milman property for these convex sets is studied.
