The European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) will be one of the most performant low-emittance synchrotron radiation sources covering the x-ray domain. Construction of the facility in Grenoble started in January 1988 with the following target specifications: first priority to insertion devices; in general, capacity to produce brilliances in the 1018 to 1019 photons/(s mm2 mrad2 0.1% bandwidth) range from undulators; in particular, capacity to produce a brilliance larger than 1×1018 in the fundamental of an undulator at 14.4 keV; high flexibility of the lattice to accommodate wigglers and undulators; stability of the beam greater than one tenth of the rms dimensions; beam lifetime greater than 8 h; capability of providing bending magnet sources at 10 and 20 keV. The source will be completed by mid 1993. The governments of France, Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, United Kingdom, Spain, Switzerland, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden are contributing to the financing.
