Description: An experimental data processing system has been developed to demonstrate the feasibility of processing high speed, multispectral image data on board the spacecraft. The design incorporates real-time processing with adaptable operation in an expandable architecture. The experimental hardware is coupled to test support and computing equipment to provide a laboratory tool for evaluating and demonstrating each of the processing functions as well as the overall system operation. An evaluation of the high speed processor was conducted to ensure that the desired system throughput was achieved without sacrificing processing accuracy. A description of the system is presented along with the results of the test and evaluation activity.

Description: The various elements of the Information Adaptive System (IAS) program are discussed along with the design features, approaches, and algorithms employed within the system. This program was initiated by NASA in order to develop an adaptable data processing system which will accommodate high speed multispectral image data in the real-time spacecraft environment. The development of this system is examined, including the test and support equipment required to evaluate and demonstrate the operational performance of the system in terms of the applicability of the design to high speed onboard processing. In addition to a high throughput rate capability, this system will be flexible, programmable, and capable of adapting its operation to external commands and characteristics of the data stream.

Description: A study was conducted to determine how major improvements in spacecraft computer systems can be obtained from recent advances in hardware and software technology. Investigations into integrated circuit technology indicated that the CMOS/SOS chip set being developed for the Air Force Avionics Laboratory at Wright Patterson had the best potential for improving the performance of spaceborne computer systems. An integral part of the chip set is the bit slice arithmetic and logic unit. The flexibility allowed by microprogramming, combined with the software investigations, led to the specification of a baseline architecture and instruction set.
