    Description: Programmed cell death (apoptosis) occurs during normal development of the central nervous system. However, the mechanisms that determine which neurons will succumb to apoptosis are poorly understood. Blockade of N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptors for only a few hours during late fetal or early neonatal life triggered widespread apoptotic neurodegeneration in the developing rat brain, suggesting that the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate, acting at NMDA receptors, controls neuronal survival.     Description: The BRAF kinase is mutated, typically Val 600--〉Glu (V600E), to induce an active oncogenic state in a large fraction of melanomas, thyroid cancers, hairy cell leukaemias and, to a smaller extent, a wide spectrum of other cancers. BRAF(V600E) phosphorylates and activates the MEK1 and MEK2 kinases, which in turn phosphorylate and activate the ERK1 and ERK2 kinases, stimulating the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway to promote cancer. Targeting MEK1/2 is proving to be an important therapeutic strategy, given that a MEK1/2 inhibitor provides a survival advantage in metastatic melanoma, an effect that is increased when administered together with a BRAF(V600E) inhibitor. We previously found that copper (Cu) influx enhances MEK1 phosphorylation of ERK1/2 through a Cu-MEK1 interaction. Here we show decreasing the levels of CTR1 (Cu transporter 1), or mutations in MEK1 that disrupt Cu binding, decreased BRAF(V600E)-driven signalling and tumorigenesis in mice and human cell settings. Conversely, a MEK1-MEK5 chimaera that phosphorylated ERK1/2 independently of Cu or an active ERK2 restored the tumour growth of murine cells lacking Ctr1. Cu chelators used in the treatment of Wilson disease decreased tumour growth of human or murine cells transformed by BRAF(V600E) or engineered to be resistant to BRAF inhibition.     Notes: Summary Microinjections of the cholinergic agonists, carbachol and bethanechol, either into the amygdala or into the dorsal hippocampus produced sustained limbic seizures and brain damage in rats. Systemic administration of pilocarpine in rats resulted in a sequence of convulsive disorders and widespread brain damage as well. Scopolamine prevented the development of convulsive activity and brain damage produced by cholinomimetics. These results suggest that the excessive stimulation of cholinergic muscarinic receptors can lead to limbic seizures and brain damage. It is postulated that muscarinic cholinergic mechanisms are linked to the etiology of temporal lobe epilepsy and epileptic brain damage.

    Notes: Abstract Using the Schwinger coupled boson representation of spin operators, we have derived a two Bose fluid like picture of a Heisenberg ferromagnet. In the magnetised state belowT c one of these fluids can be regarded as composed of magnons, the latter being excitations of the second condensed Bose fluid. Employing the coherent states technique for Schwinger bosons we have formulated ac-number description of the Heisenberg model. In contrast to previous proposals our description does not involve many body interactions and the Liouville operator is a second order differential operator.

    Notes: Abstract It is thought that impairment, of energy metabolism that results in deterioration of membrane function, leading to loss of the Mg2+ block on NMDA receptors, and allowing persistent activation of these receptors by glutamate, might be a cause of neuronal death in neurodegenerative disorders. Studies in rodents using mitochondrial respiratory chain toxins, such as aminooxyacetic acid, 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium, malonic acid and 3-nitropropionic acid, suggest that such processes may indeed be involved in neurotoxicity. Striatal and nigral degeneration induced by mitochondrial toxins in rodents resembles the neuropathology seen in humans suffering from Huntington's or Parkinson's disease, and can be prevented either by decortication or by NMDA receptor antagonists. Such experimental observations suggest that glutamate may be involved in neuronal death leading to neurodegenerative disorders in humans. If so, glutamate antagonists may offer a therapeutic approach for retarding the progression of these disabling disorders.

    Notes: Abstract The canonical statistical sum for the Breit-Darwin plasma is investigated by means of a generalized van Kampen cellular method. In particular, the pair correlation function is derived. This function agrees with that previously obtained by Trubnikov from the approximate closure of the BBGKY hierarchy. The method developed in this paper can be used for the description of other systems in which the velocity-dependent forces are pairwise.
