    Description: Conventional diamond exploration seldom involves searching for diamonds in rock and soil samples; rather, it focuses on the search for "indicator minerals." Kimberlite indicator minerals include garnet, olivine, chromite, pyroxene, and ilmenite, and these can be used to infer the presence of kimberlites and lamproites in the vicinity of where the samples were collected. Ilmenite has served as an effective indicator mineral for more than 40 years due to its resistance to chemical and physical weathering. As a result of its relatively high density compared to other indicator minerals, ilmenite grains often accumulate in placer deposits downstream from a kimberlite source. Although the ideal formula for ilmenite is FeTiO 3 , the crystal structure is also favorable to cation substitution owing to similarities in ionic radii and charge between Ti and Fe and other trace elements associated with its formation. We have investigated ilmenite trace element chemical signatures that can be related to the presence of diamond-bearing or diamond-free kimberlites. Our results suggest that the diamond potential of kimberlites is best reflected in the Zr/Nb ratio of ilmenite—these elements substitute for Ti in the ilmenite structure. An extensive compilation of compositions of ilmenite collected from heavy-mineral placers and from 14 kimberlites in northern Siberia (Yakutia) indicates that diamond pipes that have economically favorable diamond grades and abundances are associated with ilmenites having a Zr/Nb ratio of 〉0.37. Because of this, we suggest that ilmenite trace-element chemistry can be a useful tool to identify high-priority targets for diamond potential on the Siberian craton, and reconnaissance studies of other areas suggest that this relationship may be universally applicable.

    Description: The leaf longevity of trees, deciduous or evergreen, plays an important role in climate feedbacks and plant ecology. In modern forests of the high latitudes, evergreen trees dominate; however, the fossil record indicates that deciduous vegetation dominated during some previous warm intervals. We show, through an integration of palaeobotanical techniques and isotope geochemistry of trees in one of the earliest polar forests (Late Permian, c . 260 Ma, Antarctica), that the arborescent glossopterid taxa were both deciduous and evergreen, with a greater abundance of evergreen trees occurring in the studied forests. These new findings suggest the possibility that deciduousness was a plastic trait in ancient polar plants, and that deciduous plants, migrating poleward from lower latitudes, were probably better adapted to high-disturbance areas in environments that were light-limited.     Description: The primary function of mitochondria is respiration, where the catabolism of substrates is coupled to ATP synthesis via oxidative phosphorylation. In plants, mitochondrial composition is relatively complex and flexible and has specific pathways to support photosynthetic processes in illuminated leaves. Plant mitochondria also play important roles in a variety of cellular processes associated with carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur metabolism. Research on plant mitochondria has rapidly developed in the last few decades with the availability of the genome sequences for a wide range of model and crop plants. Recent prominent themes in plant mitochondrial research include linking mitochondrial composition to environmental stress responses, and how this oxidative stress impacts on the plant mitochondrial function. Similarly, interest in the signaling capacity of mitochondria, the role of reactive oxygen species, and retrograde and anterograde signaling has revealed the transcriptional changes of stress responsive genes as a framework to define specific signals emanating to and from the mitochondrion. There has also been considerable interest in the unique RNA metabolic processes in plant mitochondria, including RNA transcription, RNA editing, the splicing of group I and group II introns, and RNA degradation and translation. Despite their identification more than 100 years ago, plant mitochondria remain a significant area of research in the plant sciences. This Special Issue, “Plant Mitochondria”, will cover a selection of recent research topics and timely review articles in the field of plant mitochondrial research.

    Description: Whilst significant advances have been made in whole organismal proteomics approaches, many researchers still rely on combinations of tissue selection and subcellular prefractionation methods to reduce the complexity of protein extracts from plants prior to proteomic analysis. Often this will allow identification of many lower abundance proteins of the target proteome and it may involve the selection of specific organs, cell types or the isolation of specific subcellular components. These subcellular proteomes provide insight into functions following various treatments and also contribute to the wider understanding of the entire organismal proteome by cataloguing a series of sub-proteome contents. The aim of this Research Topic is to bring together knowledge of sub cellular components in different plant species to provide a basis for accelerated research. It aims to provide a mini-review for each proposed section that summarizes the current understanding of a particular proteome, with the anticipation that every 5 - 10 years we can update these definitive publications.
