    Documenting stewardship responsibilities across the annual cycle for birds on U.S. public lands (2015)

    Description: In the face of global environmental change, the importance of protected areas in biological management and conservation is expected to grow. Birds have played an important role as biological indicators of the effectiveness of protected areas, but with little consideration given to where species occur outside the breeding season. We estimated weekly probability of occurrence for 308 bird species throughout the year within protected areas in the western contiguous USA using eBird occurrence data for the combined period 2004 to 2011. We classified species based on their annual patterns of occurrence on lands having intermediate conservation mandates (GAP status 2 and 3) administered by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the United States Forest Service (USFS). We identified species having consistent annual association with one agency, and species whose associations across the annual cycle switched between agencies. BLM and USFS GAP status 2 and 3 lands contained low to moderate proportions of species occurrences, with proportions highest for species that occurred year-round or only during the summer. We identified two groups of species whose annual movements resulted in changes in stewardship responsibilities: (1) year-round species that occurred on USFS lands during the breeding season and BLM lands during the nonbreeding season; and (2) summer species that occurred on USFS lands during the breeding season and BLM lands during spring and autumn migration. Species that switched agencies had broad distributions, bred on high-elevation USFS lands, were not more likely to be identified as species of special management concern, and migrated short (year-round species) to long distances (summer species). Our findings suggest cooperative efforts that address the requirements of short-distance migratory species on GAP status 2 lands (n = 20 species) and GAP status 3 lands (n = 24) and long-distance migratory species on GAP status 2 lands (n = 9) would likely benefit their populations. Such efforts may prove especially relevant for species whose seasonal movements result in associations with different environments containing contrasting global change processes and management mandates. # doi:10.1890/14-0702.1

    Relating orogen width to shortening, erosion, and exhumation during Alpine collision (2015)

    Description: We investigate along-strike width changes of the thickened, accreted lower plate in the Central and in the Eastern Alps. Based on a series of 6 orogen-scale cross-sections and their corresponding estimates of collisional shortening we set the width of the thickened accreted lower plate (TALP) in relation to the amount of collisional shortening and exhumation. Taking the present-day, along-strike gradients in the amount of collisional shortening to represent the temporal evolution of the collisional wedge, it may be concluded that the cross-sectional area of the TALP diminishes during on-going shortening, indicating that the erosional flux outpaced the accretionary flux. Higher amounts of collisional shortening systematically coincide with smaller widths of the TALP and dramatic increases of the reconstructed eroded rock column. Higher amounts of shortening also coincide with larger amplitudes of orogen-scale, upright folds, with larger amounts of exhumation, and with higher exhumation rates. Hence, erosion did play a major role in reducing by 〉 30 km the vertical crustal thickness in order to accommodate and allow shortening by folding, but along-strike changes of exhumation rates were governed by different amounts of shortening, not by different climate. Long-term climate differences cannot explain alternating changes of width by a factor of almost two along straight segments of the orogen on length scales less than 200 km, as observed from the western Central Alps to the easternmost Eastern Alps. Sedimentary or paleontological evidences suggesting such paleo-climatic differences are lacking, suggesting that erosional processes did not directly control the width of the orogen.

A 2000-fold purification of Pol III* (all Pol III HE subunits except β) from this strain contained one molecule of -C tag per Pol III* assembly, indicating that the dominant form of Pol III* in cells is Pol III 2 2 ’. Revealing a role for in cells, mutants that express only display sensitivity to ultraviolet light and reduction in DNA Pol IV-dependent mutagenesis associated with double-strand-break repair, and impaired maintenance of an F’ episome.

    Description: Smell identification ability was measured in 1955 persons ranging in age from 5 to 99 years. On the average, women outperformed men at all ages, and nonsmokers outperformed smokers. Peak performance occurred in the third through fifth decades and declined markedly after the seventh. More than half of those 65 to 80 years old evidenced major olfactory impairment.
