    Description: We investigate magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effects of R 2 CoGa 3 ( R  = Gd, Dy, and Ho) compounds. It is found that all the compounds are ferromagnetic with the Curie temperatures of T C  = 50, 17, and 10 K for R  = Gd, Dy, and Ho, respectively. The R 2 CoGa 3 have large magnetic entropy change (Δ S ) that arise from the second-order ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic phase transition. The maximum values of Δ S are found to be −12.6, −10.8, and −13.8 J/kg K with corresponding refrigerant capacity values of 382, 252, and 287 J/kg for a magnetic field change of 0–50 kOe, respectively. The large Δ S values with little or no hysteresis losses as well as wide working temperature spans imply that the R 2 CoGa 3 compounds may serve as promising candidates for magnetic refrigeration.

    Description: Driven by the development of high-performance piezoelectric materials, actuators become an important tool for positioning objects with high accuracy down to nanometer scale, and have been used for a wide variety of equipment, such as atomic force microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy. However, positioning at the subatomic scale is still a great challenge. Ultrathin piezoelectric materials may pave the way to positioning an object with extreme precision. Using ultrathin CdS thin films, we demonstrate vertical piezoelectricity in atomic scale (three to five space lattices). With an in situ scanning Kelvin force microscopy and single and dual ac resonance tracking piezoelectric force microscopy, the vertical piezoelectric coefficient ( d 33 ) up to 33 pm·V –1 was determined for the CdS ultrathin films. These findings shed light on the design of next-generation sensors and microelectromechanical devices.

    Description: The dynamics of a secondary tearing instability is systematically investigated based on compressible Hall magnetohydrodynamic. It is found that in the early nonlinear phase of magnetic reconnection before onset of the secondary tearing instability, the geometry of the magnetic field in the reconnection region tends to form a Y-type structure in a weak Hall regime, instead of an X-type structure in a strong Hall regime. A new scaling law is found that the maximum reconnection rate in the early nonlinear stage is proportional to the square of the ion inertial length ( γ ∝ d i 2 ) in the weak Hall regime. In the late nonlinear phase, the thin elongated current sheet associated with the Y-type geometry of the magnetic field breaks up to form a magnetic island due to a secondary tearing instability. After the onset of the secondary tearing mode, the reconnection rate is substantially boosted by the formation of the X-type geometries of magnetic field in the reconnection regions. With a strong Hall effect, the maximum reconnection rate linearly increases with the increase of the ion inertial length ( γ ∝ d i ).

    Description: Slow shock formation and structure associated with magnetic reconnection are investigated in the presence of sub-Alfvénic shear flow using a compressible resistive MHD model. It is found for the first time that one or two pairs of the slow shocks are formed in the inflow region away from the reconnection separatrices within compressible resistive MHD. The distributions of the slow shocks depend largely on the plasma beta and the shear flow velocity that lead to the increase of magnetic reconnection rate. One pair of the slow shocks is formed for β = 0.2 and two pairs of the slow shocks are generated for β = 1.0 with the shear flow velocity in the range 0.6 VA to 0.9 VA. For high plasma beta (β = 5.0), there is no slow shock formed outside the reconnection separatrices. The results can be applied to interpret slow shock observations at the dayside magnetopause.

    Description: Nonlinear dynamics of magnetic reconnection with an external sub-Alfvenic parallel shear flow is investigated by using two-dimensional compressible Hall MHD simulation. Two pairs of slow shocks in the inflow region are generated by the sub-Alfvenic shear flow in the MHD simulation [Li et al., 2012]. With inclusion of Hall effects, it is found that whistler waves are generated in the downstream region of slow shocks. The whistler waves propagating toward the reconnection region drive a large bursty enhancement in magnetic reconnection during its decaying phase.

    Description: Ectodysplasin, a member of the tumor necrosis factor family, is encoded by the anhidrotic ectodermal dysplasia (EDA) gene. Mutations in EDA give rise to a clinical syndrome characterized by loss of hair, sweat glands, and teeth. EDA-A1 and EDA-A2 are two isoforms of ectodysplasin that differ only by an insertion of two amino acids. This insertion functions to determine receptor binding specificity, such that EDA-A1 binds only the receptor EDAR, whereas EDA-A2 binds only the related, but distinct, X-linked ectodysplasin-A2 receptor (XEDAR).     Description: Allelopathy of Chinese fir [ Cunninghamia lanceolata (Lamb.) Hook.] has been considered an important cause of productivity decline in successive rotations in Chinese fir plantations. Growth of Chinese fir germinants was measured to understand the allelopathic potential of its leaves and roots, as well as its rhizosphere soil, from different plantation ages. Results show that aqueous extracts from Chinese fir leaves and roots and rhizosphere soil significantly inhibited the growth of germinants. Leaf aqueous extracts showed the strongest inhibitory effects indicating that allelochemicals were produced by the leaf and released into the soil through the roots. Leaf and the root aqueous extracts, as well as the rhizosphere soil, from older Chinese fir plantations exhibited stronger allelopathic potential. Tissue aqueous extract from a 27-year-old Chinese fir showed stronger inhibitory effects on the growth of germinants compared with that from a 3-year-old one. More cyclic dipeptides were found in the leaf aqueous extract; and even more were found in the tissue aqueous extract and in the rhizosphere soil from older plantations. This suggests that more cyclic dipeptides are produced by leaves and released into the soil through the root exudation as Chinese fir plantations increase in age.

    Description: The severe defects in growth plate development caused by chondrocyte extracellular signal-regulated protein kinases 1 and 2 (ERK1/2) gain or loss-of-function suggest that tight spatial and temporal regulation of mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling is necessary to achieve harmonious growth plate elongation and structure. We provide here evidence that neurofibromin, via its Ras guanosine triphosphatase -activating activity, controls ERK1/2-dependent fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) signaling in chondrocytes. We show first that neurofibromin is expressed in FGFR-positive prehypertrophic and hypertrophic chondrocytes during growth plate endochondral ossification. Using mice lacking neurofibromin 1 ( Nf1 ) in type II collagen-expressing cells, ( Nf1 col2 –/– mutant mice), we then show that lack of neurofibromin in post-mitotic chondrocytes triggers a number of phenotypes reminiscent of the ones observed in mice characterized by FGFR gain-of-function mutations. Those include dwarfism, constitutive ERK1/2 activation, strongly reduced Ihh expression and decreased chondrocyte proliferation and maturation, increased chondrocytic expression of Rankl, matrix metalloproteinase 9 ( Mmp9 ) and Mmp13 and enhanced growth plate osteoclastogenesis, as well as increased sensitivity to caspase-9 mediated apoptosis. Using wildtype (WT) and Nf1 –/– chondrocyte cultures in vitro , we show that FGF2 pulse-stimulation triggers rapid ERK1/2 phosphorylation in both genotypes, but that return to the basal level is delayed in Nf1 –/– chondrocytes. Importantly, in vivo ERK1/2 inhibition by daily injection of a recombinant form of C-type natriuretic peptide to post-natal pups for 18 days was able to correct the short stature of Nf1 col2 –/– mice. Together, these results underscore the requirement of neurofibromin and ERK1/2 for normal endochondral bone formation and support the notion that neurofibromin, by restraining RAS-ERK1/2 signaling, is a negative regulator of FGFR signaling in differentiating chondrocytes.
