Summary „Serinus“ citrinelloides is a small African Cardueline finch of doubtful systematic position which, until now, was either placed with the genusSpinus (orCarduelis), or with the genusSerinus. The data presented here, predominantly ethological ones, allow a more exact classification. The studies were made in the Kivu highlands of the Eastern Congo, where the species is represented by the racefrontalis. The behaviour and one breeding cycle have also been studied in captive birds. The birds live in all areas with lower vegetation, in which also their food, seeds of various species of Compositae, can be found. They are adapted to this by a siskin-like technique of getting the seeds out of the flower-heads, siskin-like climbing, and a fine bill. These characters have apparently been the reason for placing the species withSpinus, although they are due to mere convergent evolution. The birds are social to a small degree. The aggressivity is low as it is also in other serins with a yellow “male“ plumage. Beside the upright posture which the bird adopts when uttering the fighting call, threat and fighting behaviour is like that of most Cardueline finches. The breeding season runs from January to July. It is postponed to the rainy season for several months and accords to the season of blossom and seed-bearing of the feeding plants. The ♂ then utters his song in the same posture in which he gives also the fighting call. He courts also to the ♀ in this way, but then drops and quivers the wings additionally. The only pair-bond ceremony is courtship feeding. ♂ and ♀ take part in nest construction. Both solicite for copulation by dropping and quivering the wings. The ♀ is dominant to the ♂ during the breeding cycle. The clutch size is two or three. The eggs are laid with an interval of one day each. The incubation time is 13 days, the nestling time 15 days. The young are only fed on seeds of Compositae. From the sixth day of the nestlings' live there is no further nest sanitation, but the excrements remain on the nest rim. The nestling has a particular mouth marking, viz. a blue-violet bulge on the side behind the bill angles. Song and calls are easily to homologise to those ofOchrospiza. The only call ofOchrospiza not present in this species, is the food-offering note of the ♂. The fighting call consists of seven syllables. The moult is rather slow. Moulting birds can be found all the year over; the moult seems to be at least partly independent of external factors. Most of the characters of„Serinus“ citrinelloides correspond to similar ones ofOchrospiza, but not to those of other serin genera. Therefore, in spite of some aberrant features, which are due to the adaptation to the different way of feeding, the species is to be placed intoOchrospiza.
Notizen:
