Properties of four-dimensional theories on M(4), obtained from multidimensional pure Yang–Mills theories on E=M(4)×S/R via coset space-dimensional reduction, are discussed. Scalar potentials of the reduced theory for the case where S/R is a symmetric space are studied in detail. An explicit relation between extrema of these potentials and solutions of the multidimensional equations of motion (spontaneous compactification solutions) are established. Some quantum properties of the dimensionally reduced theory are also discussed.
