Description / Table of Contents: The Reaction of Dimethyl(chloromethyl)amine with Lewis-Acids and -BasesDimethyl(chloromethyl)amine, (CH3)2NCH2Cl, forms with AlCl3, SbCl3, and SbCl5 the complex dimethyl(methylene)ammonium salts [(CH3)2N=CH2]AlCl4,[(CH3)2N=CH2]SbCl4, and [(CH3)2N=CH2]SbCl6. The structure of the cation is elucidated with the help of the 1H n.m.r spectra. -  Weak bases such as triphenylphosphine and dimethylsulfide do not react with the α-chloroamine. Nevertheless tributylphosphine adds easily to give the phosphonium chloride [(n-C4H9)3PCH2N(CH3)2]Cl. - Strong bases (pKa-values above 10) substract a proton. Out of the variaty of products formed, 1.2-bis(dimethylamino)ethylene, (CH3)2N—CH=CH—N(CH3)2. bis(dimethylamino)methane. (CH3)2N—CH2—N(CH3)2, and dimethylamine can be identified. - The reaction-mechanism is discussed.
