Description: Spacelab 3 provided the platform for the first extensive application of holography in space. Holograms of excellent quality were recorded during the flight, providing information on the solution growth of triglycine sulfate crystals under microgravity conditions. The suppression of convection and the development of a symmetric concentration-depletion region around each crystal were clearly shown. Crystal growth was governed by diffusion mass transport across the depletion region. The successful performance of the holographic unit has prompted NASA to schedule a slightly modified version for reflight on IML-1; opportunities now exist for other investigators to use this facility.

Description: Spacelab 3's Fluid Experiment System, in which triglycine sulfate crystals were produced by a low temperature solution-growth technique, employs holography as its primary data-gathering system. This use of holography allows optical techniques which would be difficult to apply in orbit to be used after the holographic data is returned to ground laboratories, using an analysis of the reconstructed holographic image. The system used allows both single- and double-exposure holograms to be obtained in two separate orthogonal configurations.

Description: The diffusion coefficient of triglycine sulfate (TGS) in water was measured for several concentrations over a temperature range of 25 to 55 C. The activation energy for diffusion obtained from these measurements was 4180 cal/mol. No concentration dependence was seen. The maximum difference in D for the various ionic species present was determined by Raman spectroscopy to be about 5 percent.

Description: The photoluminescence and optical transmission of the four widely used diffusion-pump oils, DC-705, DC-704, Convalex-10, and Convoil-20, were measured. Each of the oils was found to be transparent throughout the visible region, showed some absorption in the near-UV region, and became very opaque below approximately 300 nm. Both Convalex-10 and Convoil-20 turned yellow after exposure to UV light. No such change was noted in DC-705 or DC-704. Photoluminescence was produced in each of the four oils when irradiated with UV light. Both DC-705 and DC-704 had a nearly identical luminescence spectra that peaked at 350 nm. The spectra of Convalex-10 and Convoil-20 were fairly complex, with several peaks in the visible region.

Description: The wavelength dependence of the reflectivity of Io indicates the presence of two materials on the surface of this satellite of Jupiter. These materials are sulfur and an unspecified material (R1) which shows a wavelength dependence of its reflectivity for wavelengths from 0.3 to 1.0 micron similar to the non-H2O frost spectrum of the rings of Saturn. A 60/40 admixture of these two spectra matches the observed reflection spectrum of Io from 0.3 to 3.0 microns, if the spectrum of R1 is featureless for wavelengths above 1 micron. Sulfur will give rise to a posteclipse brightening. The variation with wavelength of the temperature dependence of the reflectivity of sulfur will allow an observational confirmation of the presence of sulfur on Io. The material R1 should show a large geometrical albedo. The translucency of sulfur is consistent with the polarization-phase curve of Io. The material R1 is also required to be translucent.

Description: An experiment to study the growth of single crystals of triglycine sulfate (NH2CH2COOH)3 H2SO4 (TGS) was successfully carried out on the Spacelab-3 mission during April 29 to May 6, 1985. Two crystals of TGS were grown during the flight, using a specially developed cooled sting technique of solution crystal growth. For the first time in any flight experiment the growth was monitored on-board as well as on ground by video-schlieren technique. Hundreds of holograms were taken for the solution/crystal interaction during the growth process. Preliminary results indicate that the optical system worked very well and the quality of reconstructed holograms is satisfactory. The cooled sting technique was successfully demonstrated. Holographic interferograms indicate convection free, diffusion limited growth. Some of the preliminary results of crystal quality are also presented.

Description: The growth rates of the (001) face of triglycine sulfate (TGS) from aqueous solutions were measured at 33.55 C in an apparatus which produced a laminar flow of solution past the crystal. The data of growth rate as a function of relative supersaturation were compared with the results of two well-known models: the Burton-Cabrera-Frank (1951) surface diffusion model and the birth-and-spreading growth model. Both models produced good fits to the growth rate data. However, on the basis of the qualitative aspects of the experimentally-observed growth, it is suggested that the correct growth model for these crystals is the Burton-Cabrera-Frank model.
