Notes: [Auszug] The nature of the ‘dark energy’ that is causing the apparent accelerated expansion of the Universe is, without doubt, the biggest mystery in physics and astronomy. Although it was astrophysical observations of the acceleration that led to the discovery of dark energy, there are precious ...

Notes: [Auszug] The recognition, in the light of observational data, that Einstein's infamous cosmological constant might not be zero has changed almost everything about the way we think about the Universe, from reconsidering its origin to re-evaluating its ultimate future. But perhaps the most significant change ...

Notes: [Auszug] We begin by assuming that inflation occurs because of symmetry breaking in the observed E8 sector. After inflation has ended, the abundance of all observed particles is determined by particle production and reheating as the scalar field responsible for inflation ^oscillates and relaxes to its true ...

Notes: [Auszug] Starobinskii5 first demonstrated that a period of exponential expansion in the early Universe would result in a flat spectrum of gravitational waves today. At the time of horizon crossing, they have a fixed amplitude A, given by the relation, A2 = (2 )-2[H/Mp1]2 (1) where H is the Hubble ...

Notes: [Auszug] Radioactive decays inside the Earth produce antineutrinos that may be detectable at the surface. Their flux and spectrum contain important geophysical information. New detectors need to be developed, discriminating between sources of antineutrinos, including the cosmic-background. The latter can be ...

Notes: [Auszug] A tantalizing correlation (at the 0.97-0.999 level) between reported variations in low-order acoustic solar oscillations over the solar cycle from 1977 to 1988 and the event rate in the 37CI solar-neutrino detector over the same period is demonstrated. Such a correlation could ...

Notes: [Auszug] ANY observation of neutrinos emitted by a supernova has great significance for both particle physics and astrophysics. It would be the first direct glimpse of stellar core collapse and neutron star formation inside a supernova1"3, and would provide a fundamental test of the theory of stellar ...

Notes: [Auszug] ANY hopes that the long-standing 'solar neutrino1 problem might go away once new neutrino detectors came on line appear to have faded with the first results from the Soviet-American Gallium Experiment (SAGE), reported in Physical Review Letters last month1. Notes: [Auszug] THE solar neutrino problem has been with us now for 20 years, since Ray Davis and his colleagues announced that they had observed, at their underground Homestake detector, fewer than half as many neutrinos from the Sun as theorists had expected. The debate on the significance of that result has ...

Notes: Abstract A black hole may carry quantum numbers that arenot associated with massless gauge fields, contrary to the spirit of the “no-hair” theorems. The “quantum hair” is invisible in the classical limit, but measurable via quantum interference experiments. Quantum hair alters the temperature of the radiation emitted by a black hole. It also induces non-zero expectation values for fields outside the event horizon; these expectation values are non-perturbative in ℏ, and decay exponentially far from the hole. The existence of quantum hair demonstrates that a black hole can have an intricate quantum-mechanical structure that is completely missed by standard semiclassical theory.
