Notes: Abstract The shattering of a wave (quasiparticle) with a dispersion curve consisting of two quadratic branches by a planar defect is discussed. The analog of such a process is the scattering of a similar wave (quasiparticle) in a one-dimensional system by a point defect. It is shown that even when the defect is passive, i.e., has no internal degrees of freedom, scattering may become resonant. The physical explanation of this effect is that a wave with a lower-lying spectrum scattered by the defect is in resonance with a localized (bound) state emerging because of the interaction between the defect and a wave with a higher-lying spectrum.

Notes: Abstract We discuss the dynamics of a magnetic soliton in a one-dimensional ferromagnet placed in a weakly nonuniform magnetic field. In the presence of a constant weak magnetic-field gradient the soliton quasimomentum is a linear function of time, which induces oscillatory motion of the soliton with a frequency determined by the magnetic-field gradient; the phenomenon is similar to Bloch oscillations of an electron in a weak electric field. An explicit description of soliton oscillations in the presence of a weak magnetic-field gradient is given in the adiabatic approximation. Two turning points are found in the motion of the soliton and the varieties of bounded and unbounded soliton motion are discussed. The Landau-Lifshitz equations are solved numerically for the case of a soliton moving in a weakly nonuniform magnetic field. The soliton is shown to emit a low-intensity spin wave near one of the turning points due to violation of the adiabatic approximation, and the necessary conditions for such an approximation to hold are established.

Notes: Abstract Resonance scattering of a transverse sound wave by a planar defect in an elastic isotropic medium is studied in a wide range of values of the ratio of the damping length and the size of the region of localization of longitudinal oscillations. The transition between two limiting cases is described. The character of the transition is demonstrated by typical plots of the dependence of the reflection and transmission coefficients on the parameter relating the wavelength of the incident wave and the strength of the defect. It is shown that renormalization of total reflection into conventional dissipative passage occurs for values of this parameter below a certain critical value.

Notes: Abstract By analogy with a problem on the kinetics of the last stages of solid supersaturated solution decay, considered in Ref. 1, the problem on the kinetics of cell population development in the nutrient solution is formulated. The state of the system is described by the cell size distribution function and the concentration of nutrient in the solution. The stability of spatially homogeneous cell distribution is analyzed. Bifurcation, connected with the origin of nonhomogeneous spatial distribution of cells and nutrient, is discovered. Dissipative structures arising near the point of first bifurcation are found.

Notes: Abstract Basic concepts and results of the theory of equilibrium cracks in real solids are formulated. Their inelasticity is conditioned by that or other defects and processes of stress relaxation by their transfer. The equilibrium crack in the point defect medium is examined. In crystalline solids these defects may be represented by vacancies characterizing the self-diffusion or impurity atoms. The system of equations has been formulated in which equilibrium equations of the crack are completed by the point defect transfer equations and the relation between defect flows and inelastic deformation of the material is written in the proper way. The concrete analysis is carried out for the plain crack that is continuously long in one direction. The crack evolution is studied in a case where stress relaxation is conditioned by the self-diffusion of the material. In this case an infinitely large penetration of crack boundaries for point defect is supposed. Especial attention is paid to the initial stage of the diffusion blunting of a thin crack tip. Analytical description of this process is given. Time of blunting is estimated. Results obtained are applied to the analysis of processes: the brittle-plastic transition, superplasticity.

Notes: Thermodynamics of the melting of a DNA-type macromolecule is studied theoretically. Elements of the macromolecule are able to annex a low-molecular impurity from the solvent (e.g., metal ions). Two models of the annexing of the impurity to the macromolecule are analyzed. It is shown that the concentration dependence of the helix-coil phase transition temperature is describable by a non-monotonic function in the case of certain relations between parameters.
