Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung 1. 4. Zugesetztes Indol wird von belüfteten Kulturen verbraucht.
Notes: Summary 1. Klebsiella oxytoca excretes indole when growing in not aerated cultures with gluconate (or glucose) as the only carbon source. 2. Threonine stimulates and serine decreases the formation of indole. 3. In aerated cultures no excretion of indole could be found. 4. Indole in the culture medium is utilized in aerated cultures.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Bildung von Pigmenten mit Redoxfunktion in Pseudomonas-Kulturen ist vom Eisengehalt des Nährbodens abhängig.
Notes: Summary The formation of pigments having the function of redox catalysts in cultures of Pseudomonas spp. with gluconate as a sole carbon source was found to be related to the concentration of iron in the medium. In aerated cultures the accumulation of these pigments was extremely decreased. These pigments were: phenazine-α-carboxylic acid formed by Pseudomonas aureofaciens, pseudoiodinine formed by Ps. fluorescens var. pseudoiodinum, and pyocyanine formed by Ps. aeruginosa.

Notes: Summary 1. Formation of phenazine-α-carbolic acid in Pseudomonas aureofaciens is closely related to the carbon sources in the culture medium. 2. With the exception of quinic acid only carbon sources with glyceraldehyde phosphate as metabolic intermediate seem to give rise to phenazine-α-carboxylic acid production. 3. Monoiodoacetate inhibits this pigment formation.

Notes: Asbtract 1. Pseudomonas aureofaciens does not excrete phenazine-α-carboxylic acid, either in a medium with pyruvic acid as sole source of carbon or in a medium with glutamic acid as sole source of carbon, but pigmentation will occur in a medium with glutamic acid _ pyruvic acid as carbon sources. 2. Each of these carbon sources does give rise to phenazine-α-carboxylic acid synthesis in a medium supplemented with 1 mM of the three aromatic amino acids. 3. A mutant strain of Pseudomonas fluorescens var. pseudoiodinum excretes protocatechuic acid and gallic acid in media with pyruvic acid + glutamic acid as carbon sources, but not or very scarcely in media with only one of these two organic acids as sole source of carbon. 4. When supplemented with the three aromatic amino acids, non of the hydroxybenzoic acids could be found in this medium inoculated with this strain. It appears, that the surplus of the aromatic biosynthesis in P. aureofaciens is channeled into phenazine-α-carboxylic acid formation, whereas in P. fluorescens var. pseudoiodinum the enzymes of this pathway are inhibited or repressed if the media are supplemented with the aromatic amino acids.

Notes: Summary Strains of the species Klebsiella oxytoca growing on glucose or gluconate medium accumulate 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid, its serin and threonine derivative. These strains also accumulate two compounds exhibiting fluorescence under ultraviolet radiation. One of these is probably a phosphoric ester. The formation of both substances could be partially inhibited by the tryptophane.

Notes: Summary Enterobacter cloacae and Pseudomonas fluorescens excrete gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid) when growing in a medium with gluconate and quinic acid. This acid could be isolated and identified by melting point, mixed melting point, elementary analysis, molecular weight, paper chromatography with 5 solvents and several color reagents. A new spray reagent for o-diphenols (vanadate) is described. this reagent gives different colors with different o-diphenols.

Notes: Abstract For the main component of the pigments ofErwinia rubrifaciens, we suggest the hitherto unknown structure of a 3-(3-carboxymethyl-4,5-dihydro-4,5-dioxo-2-pyrrolyl)-4,5,6-trihydroxy-pyridine-2-acetic acid. Its isolation and characterization are described. Inasmuch as arylpyrrolindiones are known to be red, the proposed structure can account for the color of the pigment. The 2,3,4-trihydroxypyridine moiety probably inhibits the electron transport in mitochondria. This could explain the toxic action ofErwinia rubrifaciens onJuglans regia.

Notes: Abstract The pink pigment ofErwinia rhapontici has been shown to be the known ferrous complex of proferrorosamine A, previously isolated fromPseudomonas species. The identification was based primarily on electronic absorption (visible), mass spectrometric, and nuclear magnetic resonance data. A purification procedure different from those hitherto reported was developed that in the mg range allows the straightforward isolation of both ferrorosamine A and proferrorosamine A as triethylammonium salts suitable for molecular weight determination by field desorption-mass spectrometry.E. rhapontici is pathogenic to various plants and is, therefore, likely to produce one or more unspecific toxic compounds. Proferrorosamine A, the complexation capacity of which can probably cause an iron deficiency in plants, may well be such a factor.
