Description / Table of Contents:
Photochromism of Methyl-substituted DehydrodianthronesAfter irradiation with Hg 366 nm at low temperatures the photochromic forms of 1,3,6′,8′-, 1,4,5′,8′-, and 2,4,5′,7′-tetramethyldehydrodianthrone (1, 2, and 3) have been investigated spectroscopically in solvents of different viscosity and polarity. In the case of 2 a new isomeric compound E is observed in all solvents at sufficiently high visocity. Its spectrum is shifted to short wavelengths compared with that of the normal form A. The reaction is entirely reversible, the activation energy of the back reaction amounts to 11.4 kcal/mole. For E a enole form (6) is proposed. Under other conditions the forms B and C are obtained as in 1 and 3. In the case of 3 no E-form is observed, but the form C Which usually does not appear without substituents in 1,8′-position. A conversion D→B is not observed in 2 or 3.
Notes:
