Notes: Darwin is well known for his wondrously ambiguous rhetoric. The author who used an ‘entangled bank’ as his metaphor for Nature and its complex relationships built up the substance of his text from a corresponding entanglement of unresolved theoretical relations. Ambiguous positions, arguments that seem to fold in on themselves, vacillations, contradictions, and pluralities of explanation suffuse Darwin's science and its constituent metascience. The Origin abounds in ambiguities with regard to the technical features of evolutionary biology. But the domain of ambiguity I wish to address is Darwin's metaphysical stance. I want to approach the question of Darwin and secularization through what might be called the trope of ambiguity. My principle concern is with the origins of that ambiguity. These lie in the conflicting cultural and ideological resources Darwin used to construct the theory of natural selection.

Notes: [Auszug] The kindly Professor John S. Henslow of Cambridge, well known for arranging Charles Darwin's berth on HMSBeagle, was also a rigorous researcher who recorded patterns of variation within and between plant populations and was motivated to understand the nature of species: the big question of natural ...

Notes: A process for the chemical modification of polybutadienes and natural rubber by various metallocene compounds is described. Soluble products of up to 43% ferrocene content were obtained. The effect of substrate, metallocene, and reaction conditions on the course and extent of substitution was investigated. The glass transition temperature Tg was found to increase considerably with the degree of substitution, e.g., cis-polybutadiene substituted with ferrocene (18 mole-%) has a Tg of 30°C, as compared with -91°C for the unsubstituted polymer.

Notes: The phenanthrenechromium dicarbonyl moiety was anchored by a photosubstitution reaction onto commercial resins substituted by diphenylphosphine groups. From scanning electron microscope photographs it was found that, whereas the chloromethylation reaction proceeded homogeneously throughout the polymer beads, the phosphination and photochemical reactions behaved differently, depending on the macrostructure and the morphology of the polymer beads. Large pore size dimensions (1300 Å) allowed the reagents (phosphine and chromium complex) to react throughout the polymer beads, whereas small pore sizes (〈 50 Å) permitted penetration of the reagent only to a limited extent.

Notes: New graft copolymers were synthesized by grafting hydroxyethyl methacrylate and hydroxpropyl methacrylate on poly(vinyl alcohol) in aqueous solution with Ce+4ions as initiator. The dependence of the percentage of grafting and monomer conversion on the concentration of the monomer, on the concentration of the initiator, on the total concentration of the reactants, and on temperature and duration of the reaction were investigated. Some basic properties of the graft copolymers and some preliminary permeation measurements of water vapors through films, made from these copolymers, are also reported.

Notes: Copolymers of methyl α-cyanocrotonate with styrene, acrylonitrile, and vinyl acetate were prepared in bulk by free radical initiation. The copolymerization parameters were determined for each pair by several methods. The basic properties, that is, intrinsic viscosity, solubility, melting range, and glass transition temperature of the obtained copolymers, were determined.

Notes: Trisubstituted ethylene, ethyl α-cyanocinnamate, is readily copolymerized with vinyl acetate by a conventional radical initiator. Terminal, penultimate, and “complex” copolymerization models were applied by using the data of composition of the copolymers obtained in bulk and by copolymerization in benzene, ethyl acetate, and chloroform. The model based on the participation of the monomer complexes describes satisfactorily the deviation from the terminal copolymerization model. The proton NMR analyses of the monomer mixtures indicate that the interaction between the monomers leads to the formation of weak monomer complexes. Kinetic studies of the initial rate dependence on the total monomer concentration and monomer feed composition enabled us to evaluate the degree of participation of the free uncomplexed monomers and the monomer complex in the propagation reactions. The contribution of the complexed monomers in the propagation stages increases with the increase in total monomer concentration. The initial rate of the copolymerization is proportional to the square root of the initiator concentration, thus confirming the bimolecular termination of the macrochains. The rate constants of the addition reactions of the complex and free monomers were evaluated from the kinetic studies. The quantitative kinetic treatment provided information regarding the relative weight of the termination reaction and indicated that the termination in the system occurs predominantly by the cross-termination reaction between two growing polymer radicals with different kinds of monomer units at the ends. Additional information on the termination in this system was obtained from viscosity measurements.

Notes: Acrylonitrile (M1), styrene (M2), and α-cyanocinnamamide (α-CCA) (M3) were terpolymerized by thermal initiation to low conversion, and the monomer feed/terpolymer composition relationship was determined by Slocombe's triangular graph. The solubility, the thermal behavior, the impact strength, and the chemical resistance of the terpolymers of various compositions were investigated.

Notes: The synthesis of ferrocene-containing polymers by chemical modification of chlorinated polyethylenes, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and other halogenated polymers, under Friedel-Crafts conditions, is described. The effect of reaction conditions on the structure and composition of the products obtained with various substrates was investigated. Soluble polymers of up to 62% ferrocene content were obtained. In most cases, substitution was accompanied by dehydrohalogenation. The ferrocene-to-vinylene ratio was higher in the reaction products of chlorinated polyethylenes than in those of PVC.
