Notes: Summary The murein (peptidoglycan) of 6 strains of L. bifidus, isolated from faeces of breast fed infants or from the intestine of bees, respectively, contained muramic acid, glucosamine, alanine, glutamic acid, lysine and glycine at a molar ratio of 1:1:2:1:1:1. The ratio of l-alanine: d-alanine is 1,1: 1. The analysis of the peptides obtained by acid partial hydrolysis indicated that the amino acid sequence of the tetrapeptide is identical with that of most bacteria (l-Ala-d-Glu-l-Lys-d-Ala). Glutamic acid is present as an amide. Glycine is involved in the crosslinking of adjacent muropeptides by forming a bridge between the ɛ-aminogroup of lysine and the carboxyl group of a C-terminal d-alanine. About 50% of the glycine is N-terminal, indicating that only 50% of the possible cross linkages are realized. The murein of these strains of L. bifidus resembles the murein of staphylococci, but differs by the number of glycine molecules. While a pentameric glycylpeptide occurs in the murein of staphylococci, only one molecule of glycine is involved in the crosslinkage of the murein described here.

Notes: SUMMARY— The effects of energy level, sex and sire upon the fatty acid composition of porcine fackfat were studied in two separate experiments. In both experiments, the inner layer of backfat consistently contained more total saturated fatty acids, primarily accounted for by stearic acid, and contained less palmitoleic, oleic, and linoleic acids than the outer layer. None of the variables in either experiment significantly (P 〉.0.5) affected the differences between layers. In Experiment 1, energy levels below 80% of full feed significantly (P 〈 .01) decreased stearic acid content and increased linoleic acid content. In Experiment 2 the fatty acid composition of backfat from pigs fed 80% of full feed did not differ significantly (P 〉 .05) from full-fed pigs.Backfat from spayed gilts had significantly (P 〈 .01) less linoleic acid than that from boars or barrows, while boars had a significantly (P 〈 .01) higher content of linoleic acid than the other sexes. In Experiment 1, the backfat from barrows contained significantly (P 〈 .01) more stearic acid than that from gilts. The data from both experiments indicated that sire significantly (P 〈 .01) affected the linoleic acid content of the backfat, while the results of Experiment 2 also showed significant (P 〈 .01) sire effects upon the palmitic, palmitoleic, and stearic acid contents.

Notes: Red clover cv. Hungaropoly was slot-seeded into a perennial ryegrass-dominant sward in April 1979. Glyphosate and paraquat were applied separately as bandsprays each at two doses and at two band widths. Control plots were either slot-seeded without a herbicide bandspray or received ±150 kg N ha−1 a−1. Red clover establishment was assessed and amounts of dry matter (DM) and total N accumulated were measured at two harvests in 1979 and three harvests in 1980. Bandspraying increased seedling vigour and development and resulted in the eventual replacement of 1 t grass DM ha−1 by an equivalent amount of red clover. Of the treatment variables investigated, bandspray width had the greatest influence on red clover establishment and productivity. The slot-seeded area, meaned for all treatments, produced a total of 6.40 and 13.16 t DM ha−1 in 1979 and 1980. This was estimated to be equivalent to the all-grass sward receiving 112 kg N ha−1 a−1 during the second year of the experiment or 238 kg N ha−1 over the 2 years when measured in terms of N yield. Slot-seeding overcomes several of the problems associated with conventional establishment of red clover.

Notes: A numerical study of the plasma presheath has been performed, extending earlier work to include the effects of general source functions, and allowing for collisions in the presheath. Analytic results for a collisionless presheath with particular source functions have been confirmed, and comparisons with a numerical study of a weakly collisional presheath have been made. The extrapolation of these calculations to high collision frequency, where they are compared to a simple analytic model, and the effects of the choice of source functions are presented.

Notes: This paper describes a novel approach to modeling chemically active dc discharges, and its application to silane. An appropriate electric field was determined from a combination of experimental results and classical dc discharge theory. Utilizing this electric field, a kinetic description of the electron motion was used to calculate the ionization rate and the electron distribution function throughout the discharge. From the calculated rate of ionization and the assumed electric field and allowing for chemical reactions, steady-state fluxes of ions to the anode were calculated. These results compared favorably to the experimental results of Weakleim et al. [J. Vac. Sci. Technol. A 1, 29 (1987)]. A proposed model for the observed variations in the fractional ion currents is given.
