Abstract Current status of the theory of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is reviewed. The QED part of the theory is in a very good shape at present and the accuracy of its prediction far exceeds the expected precision of the new muon g — 2 experiment at the Brookhaven National Laboratory. On the other hand, further improvement is urgently needed for the hadronic contribution, which requires new precision measurements of hadron production cross sections ine + e − collisions. A complete standard-model calculation of the two-loop electroweak contribution will also be very useful in reducing the remaining theoretical uncertainties.
