    Notes: The adsorbed state of thiophene on Si(100)-(2×1) surface at 300 K has been investigated using low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS). (2×1) LEED pattern at 300 K is sustained after the saturated exposure of thiophene, and the saturation coverage is estimated to be ∼0.6 by AES, suggesting that thiophene molecule is chemisorbed molecularly on the Si(100) surface most likely by σ bonds between C and Si atoms. UPS spectrum for the chemisorbed thiophene shows not only the π orbital shift but also the σ orbital shift. Semiempirical PM3 calculations based on the cluster model propose that the thiophene molecule adsorbs on the Si(100)-(2×1) surface by forming di-σ bonds between C atoms of thiophene and Si atoms of the surface. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The effect of the Si layer thickness on the Er3+ photoluminescence properties of the Er-doped Si/SiO2 superlattice is investigated. We find that the Er3+ luminescence intensity increases by over an order of magnitude as the Si layer thickness is reduced from 3.6 nm down to a monolayer of Si. Temperature dependence of the Er3+ luminescence intensity and time-resolved measurement of Er3+ luminescence intensity identify the increase in the excitation rate as the likely cause for such an increase, and underscore the importance of the Si/SiO2 interface in determining the Er3+ luminescence properties. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The atomic-scale surface structural evolution of Si(100) exposed to gas-phase thermal hydrogen atoms, H(g), has been investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and temperature-programed desorption mass spectrometry. For the substrate temperature (Ts) between 420 and 530 K, dihydride species in 3×1:H domains were selectively etched upon extensive exposures to H(g). As a result, etch pits grew laterally along Si surface dimer rows. The presence of these pits correlates with the absorption of H(g) into the bulk of Si(100), confirming our earlier suggestion that atomic-scale surface roughening caused by etching is a prerequisite for H(g) absorption. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: It was clearly observed with medium energy ion scattering spectroscopy that the strain in the Si(001)–SiO2 interface of thermal oxides is relaxed by annealing in N2O. The strain relaxation could be correlated with the improved hot-electron hardness of the nitrided oxides compared with the thermal oxides. Based on the direct observation of the strain relaxation, it is suggested that the incorporated N atoms at the interface release the strain and increase the immunity of trap generation under the current stress. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Abstract Polyak's subgradient algorithm for nondifferentiable optimization problems requires prior knowledge of the optimal value of the objective function to find an optimal solution. In this paper we extend the convergence properties of the Polyak's subgradient algorithm with a fixed target value to a more general case with variable target values. Then a target value updating scheme is provided which finds an optimal solution without prior knowledge of the optimal objective value. The convergence proof of the scheme is provided and computational results of the scheme are reported.

    Notes: Abstract Most of the descent methods developed so far suffer from the computational burden due to a sequence of constrained quadratic subproblems which are needed to obtain a descent direction. In this paper we present a class of proximal-type descent methods with a new direction-finding subproblem. Especially, two of them have a linear programming subproblem instead of a quadratic subproblem. Computational experience of these two methods has been performed on two well-known test problems. The results show that these methods are another very promising approach for nondifferentiable convex optimization.

    Notes: Abstract A generalized subgradient method is considered which uses the subgradients at previous iterations as well as the subgradient at current point. This method is a direct generalization of the usual subgradient method. We provide two sets of convergence conditions of the generalized subgradient method. Our results provide a larger class of sequences which converge to a minimum point and more freedom of adjustment to accelerate the speed of convergence.

    Notes: Abstract We consider the channel allocation problem, which is one of the most interesting problems in mobile radio systems. This problem is known to be NP‐complete and a couple of heuristic algorithms have been developed. In this paper, we convert the problem into a simpler form through the concept of pattern, a set of cochannel cells. We suggest another algorithm based on simulated annealing for this simplified problem. The algorithm is applied into different benchmark problems that have appeared in the literature. The presented examples illustrate that our method works very well. Computational results using our formulation and simulated annealing algorithm are reported.

    Description: Although the unifying hallmark of prion diseases is CNS neurodegeneration caused by conformational corruption of host prion protein (PrP) to its infective counterpart, contagious transmission of chronic wasting disease (CWD) results from shedding of prions produced at high titers in the periphery of diseased cervids. While deer and elk PrP primary structures are equivalent except at residue 226, which is glutamate in elk and glutamine in deer, the effect of this difference on CWD pathogenesis is largely unknown. Using a gene-targeting approach where the mouse PrP coding sequence was replaced with elk or deer PrP, we show that the resulting GtE226 and GtQ226 mice had distinct kinetics of disease onset, prion conformations, and distributions of prions in the brains of diseased mice following intracerebral CWD challenge. These findings indicate that amino acid differences at PrP residue 226 dictate the selection and propagation of divergent strains in deer and elk with CWD. Because prion strain properties largely dictate host-range potential, our findings suggest that prion strains from elk and deer pose distinct risks to sympatric species or humans exposed to CWD. GtE226 and GtQ226 mice were also highly susceptible to CWD prions following intraperitoneal and oral exposures, a characteristic that stood in stark contrast to previously produced transgenic models. Remarkably, disease transmission was effective when infected mice were cohoused with naïve cagemates. Our findings indicate that gene-targeted mice provide unprecedented opportunities to accurately investigate CWD peripheral pathogenesis, CWD strains, and mechanisms of horizontal CWD transmission.

    Description: Adaptation of prions to new species is thought to reflect the capacity of the host-encoded cellular form of the prion protein (PrPC) to selectively propagate optimized prion conformations from larger ensembles generated in the species of origin. Here we describe an alternate replicative process, termed nonadaptive prion amplification (NAPA), in which dominant conformers bypass this requirement during particular interspecies transmissions. To model susceptibility of horses to prions, we produced transgenic (Tg) mice expressing cognate PrPC. Although disease transmission to only a subset of infected TgEq indicated a significant barrier to EqPrPCconversion, the resulting horse prions unexpectedly failed to cause disease upon further passage to TgEq. TgD expressing deer PrPCwas similarly refractory to deer prions from diseased TgD infected with mink prions. In both cases, the resulting prions transmitted to mice expressing PrPCfrom the species of prion origin, demonstrating that transmission barrier eradication of the originating prions was ephemeral and adaptation superficial in TgEq and TgD. Horse prions produced in vitro by protein misfolding cyclic amplification of mouse prions using horse PrPCalso failed to infect TgEq but retained tropism for wild-type mice. Concordant patterns of neuropathology and prion deposition in susceptible mice infected with NAPA prions and the corresponding prion of origin confirmed preservation of strain properties. The comparable responses of both prion types to guanidine hydrochloride denaturation indicated this occurs because NAPA precludes selection of novel prion conformations. Our findings provide insights into mechanisms regulating interspecies prion transmission and a framework to reconcile puzzling epidemiological features of certain prion disorders.
