    Description / Table of Contents: This book covers essential aspects of transmutation technologies, highlighting especially the advances in Japan. The accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) has caused us to focus attention on a large amount of spent nuclear fuels stored in NPPs. In addition, public anxiety regarding the treatment and disposal of high-level radioactive wastes that require long-term control is growing. The Japanese policy on the back-end of the nuclear fuel cycle is still unpredictable in the aftermath of the accident. Therefore, research and development for enhancing the safety of various processes involved in nuclear energy production are being actively pursued worldwide. In particular, nuclear transmutation technology has been drawing significant attention after the accident. This publication is timely with the following highlights: 1) Development of accelerator-driven systems (ADSs), which is a brand-new reactor concept for transmutation of highly radioactive wastes; 2) Nuclear reactor systems from the point of view of the nuclear fuel cycle. How to reduce nuclear wastes or how to treat them including the debris from TEPCO’s Fukushima nuclear power stations is discussed; and 3) Environmental radioactivity, radioactive waste treatment, and geological disposal policy. State-of-the-art technologies for overall back-end issues of the nuclear fuel cycle as well as the technologies of transmutation are presented here. The chapter authors are actively involved in the development of ADSs and transmutation-related technologies. The future of the back-end issues in Japan is very uncertain after the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi NPP, and this book provides an opportunity for readers to consider the future direction of those issues

    Description: Biological scaffolds with tunable electrical and mechanical properties are of great interest in many different fields, such as regenerative medicine, biorobotics, and biosensing. In this study, dielectrophoresis (DEP) was used to vertically align carbon nanotubes (CNTs) within methacrylated gelatin (GelMA) hydrogels in a robust, simple, and rapid manner. GelMA-aligned CNT hydrogels showed anisotropic electrical conductivity and superior mechanical properties compared with pristine GelMA hydrogels and GelMA hydrogels containing randomly distributed CNTs. Skeletal muscle cells grown on vertically aligned CNTs in GelMA hydrogels yielded a higher number of functional myofibers than cells that were cultured on hydrogels with randomly distributed CNTs and horizontally aligned CNTs, as confirmed by the expression of myogenic genes and proteins. In addition, the myogenic gene and protein expression increased more profoundly after applying electrical stimulation along the direction of the aligned CNTs due to the anisotropic conductivity of the hybrid GelMA-vertically aligned CNT hydrogels. We believe that platform could attract great attention in other biomedical applications, such as biosensing, bioelectronics, and creating functional biomedical devices.     Description: Oxide heterostructures with the broken translational symmetry often trigger a two-dimensional quantum confinement and associated unique electronic properties that cannot be observed in bulk constituents. Particular interest is devoted to the formation of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at heterointerfaces between two insulators, which offers a fertile ground for fabricating advanced electronic devices. Here, we combine atomic force microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomistic first-principles calculations to demonstrate that the (100) BiFeO 3 /SrTiO 3 interface takes on a metallic nature and a 2DEG is generated at this interface. Our findings also reveal that the electronic reconstruction due to the polar discontinuity and the variation in valence state of Ti arising from diffusion of Ti cations in SrTiO 3 to Fe sites of BiFeO 3 are critical to the formation of 2DEG at the heterointerface.

    Notes: Thin films of the charge transfer complex of tetrathiofulvalene tetracyanoquinodimethane (TTF-TCNQ) deposited on KC1 and KBr were studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM). Structures corresponding to the molecular arrangement of the crystallographic ab-plane were observed in the molecular-scale AFM images. Large-scale imaging (15×15 μm) revealed that the films consist of rectangular islands whose longer sides (corresponding to the highly conductive b-axis) orient in the [110] or [1¯10] direction of the KC1 and KBr(001) surfaces. A small number of islands rotated 32° from the [110] direction were also observed on the KBr substrate. The arrangement of these islands can be explained by considering the adsorption of a TCNQ molecule to the metastable state.

    Notes: Abstract We describe an original scanning near field optical microscope setup developed to examine rhythmically beating cardiac myocytes fully immersed in culture media. Scans could be halted at any point to record localized contraction profiles. Contractions could be detected with high sub nanometric vertical sensitivity and changed shape dramatically within adjacent sub micron-sized areas. We believe that the spatial dependency of contractions arises because of system’s ability to resolve the dynamic behavior of individual sub membrane actin bundles. Our results, combining imaging and real time recording in localized areas, reveal a new, non-invasive method for studying sub micron morphological activity in live biological samples.

    Notes: Abstract Intact and fully O[emsp4 ]-sulfonated glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) including chondroitin sulfate, dermatan sulfate, hyaluronan, heparan sulfate and heparin were chemically de-O-sulfonated on their hexosamine C-6 position (6-O[emsp4 ]-desulfonation) using N,O[emsp4 ]-bis(trimethylsilyl) acetamide. 1H NMR spectroscopy and chemical compositional analysis showed that the chemical de-O[emsp4 ]-sulfonation at C-6 position of hexosamine residues in both intact and fully O[emsp4 ]-sulfonated GAGs was completely achieved. Since GAGs and their derivatives are often used as anticoagulant agents, their anti-amidolytic activities were determined. While most of anticoagulant activity of fully O[emsp4 ]-sulfonated GAGs (FGAGs) and heparin disappeared following chemical 6-O[emsp4 ]-desulfonation, the activity of 6-O-desulfonated fully O[emsp4 ]-sulfonated dermatan sulfate (De6FDS) remained. This observation suggests the importance of the position of O-sulfonate groups for anti-coagulant activity.
