    Notes: Abstract A new experimental facility based on Laser Doppler anemometry permits accurate local measurements in a horizontal pipe. Measurements of the axial velocity component in the liquid layer of the atomization/stratified flow regime are reported. The new information includes time-averaged local velocities, RMS values, probability density distributions, and power spectra. Elimination of velocity bias and calculation of velocity spectra is accomplished by a recently developed “signal reconstruction” algorithm. The data suggest that only in the vicinity of the solid surface (sublayer) does the liquid motion resemble the well-known behavior of single phase flow. Beyond that, the flow field is strongly influenced by the wavy gas/liquid interface and by the apparently intensive energy transfer from the very fast moving gas to the liquid layer.

    Notes: Abstract A photometric technique for film thickness measurements is described in this paper. It is based on the absorption of light passing through a layer of dyed liquid and takes advantage of small sized diode laser sources and sensitive light sensors. The method is non-intrusive, easy to use and to calibrate and can be implemented at relatively low cost. Laboratory tests of the technique have yielded satisfactory accuracy and repeatability. Moreover, the technique allows measurements with a good spatial resolution. Flowing film thickness measurements made photometrically are compared directly to measurements taken simultaneously with a “parallel wire conductance probe”. Time-averaged film heights, RMS values and other statistical information have been obtained by analyzing these instantaneous film thickness records. With regard to the time-averaged values of liquid film thickness, there is a satisfactory agreement between the two measuring techniques.

    Notes: Absract An electrochemical technique is employed for measuring local, instantaneous liquid-solid mass transfer coefficients in downward cocurrent gas-liquid flow through a packed bed under pulsing flow conditions. The technique involves specially designed electrodes of the same dimensions as the packing material. Also microelectrodes on the surface of a particle are tested for flow diagnostics in the microscale. The feasibility of the method is examined. Interpretation of measurements from various electrodes provides information on the pattern of mass transfer and liquid distribution in the packing.

    Notes: An experimental study of pulsing flow in trickle beds is presented, based on data from two measuring techniques. New evidence on pulse arrangement and propagation in the bed, and data on basic pulse characteristics (frequency, celerity, length, duration) as well as liquid holdup and pressure drop measurements are included. Some of these data, such as the length of the liquid-rich zone of pulses, are not currently available. Two flow regions exhibit different trends of pulse characteristics, “mild” and “wild” pulsing for relatively small and large liquid flow rates, respectively. New findings are compared with previously available data and correlations. An effort to develop new or modify existing generalized correlations is made for the aforementioned quantities.

    Notes: A first order kinetic formulation of brittle particle attrition is suggested. Experimental data show that it applies to coal particle attrition in Couette flow. These data reveal that particles are reduced by loss of surface protuberances, which are much smaller than their mean diameter. It is also shown how changes of the size spectrum, due to shearing, can be predicted.

    Notes: Fouling of tube surfaces from flowing solutions or suspensions is examined. A new approach to the removal aspects of this process is presented linking removal to the morphological and mechanical characteristics of deposit microstructure. A simplified description of deposit microstructure is employed, involving a collection of geometrically similar roughness elements. A dynamic situation is envisioned whereby these elements grow due to deposition and suffer breakage under the action of hydrodynamic forces. A mathematical model for the macroscopic fouling behavior based on the techniques of population balances is obtained and numerically analyzed. The behavior found is in agreement with experimental evidence.

    Notes: Closed-form expressions are presented for predicting vertical concentration distribution of the dispersed phase in the turbulent core of pipe and channel flow. Experimental data obtained with spherical particles, of mean diameter d50 comparable to the Kolmogorov microscale, are in good agreement with model predictions. The average value of dimensionless lateral particle diffusivity, ζ = ε/Ru*, determined from these data is approximately 0.25, that is, fairly close to previously reported measurements with much coarser particles.

The measured size spectra can be well represented by either an upper limit log-probability function or a Rosin-Rammler type of equation with constant parameters and only one variable, the maximum drop diameter dmax or d95. The latter can be predicted satisfactorily by a correlation based on the Hinze/Kolmogorov model of droplet breakup.
