Abstract The time-independent diffusion equation that describes an optical power flow in an axially perturbed multimode fibre with a lossy cladding is solved. On this basis the attenuation of plastic-clad silica (PCS) fibres depending on cladding loss, mode coupling due to fibre perturbation, launching conditions and fibre length is investigated by means of computer modelling. This involves not only attenuation properties of PCS fibres by themselves, but also how they are ‘seen’ by the backscattering measurement technique.
