Notes: A new, easily processed, organic semiconductor was prepared from poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). The Cu2+ chelate of PVA exhibited excellent surface resistivity around 103 Ω cm-2 when modified with iodine. Favorable conditions for preparing the chelate effective for the conduction were investigated. The resistivity was significantly affected by the amounts of cupric salts and iodine, satisfactory results being given by more than 15 wt% of cupric salts and about 4 wt% of iodine. Effects of molecular weight of PVA and the chelate structure were also studied.

Notes: Polyterephthalamides of high molecular weight (ηinh up to 1.9) were obtained by the direct polycondensation reaction of terephthalic acid and aromatic diamines in the presence of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) with triphenyl phosphite in a N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP)-pyridine solution that contained lithium chloride. The molecular weights of the polymers produced varied with the amount and molecular weight of PEO, which showed maximum values when PEO with a molecular weight of 2.0 × 104-5.0 × 105 was used in a concentration of about 0.5 wt % in the solvent. The polycondensation reaction was significantly affected by the level of pyridine in a mixed solvent of NMP and pyridine and by the concentration of the lithium chloride added.

Notes: Poly(α-amino acid)s of high molecular weight were obtained by the direct polycondensation reaction of α-amino acids in the presence of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) as a matrix of triphenyl phosphite and LiCl in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). Molecular weights of the polymer produced were improved by use of an increasing amount of matrix of higher molecular weight. Most favorable results were obtained by the reaction at 80°C for 16 hr at a monomer concentration of 0.33 mole/liter in a NMP solution that contained about 3 wt % LiCl in the presence of an equivalent unit mole of PVP with the molecular weight of 3.6 x 105. The polymer from β-alanine with high molecular weight, which is difficult to obtain by the NCA method, was easily prepared by this process.

Notes: Semiconducting organic polymer was obtained by the modification of polyacrylamide (PAAm)-Cu++ chelate with iodine in acetone. Favorable conditions for preparing the chelate effective for the conduction were investigated. Surface resistivities were affected by the amounts of cupric salts and iodine, satisfactory results being given by about 25 wt % of the salts based on PAAm and more than 1 wt % of iodine on the chelate. The conductivity was also varied with the degree of neutralization of the chelate in solution, and optimal values were obtained by addition of about an equimolar amount of potassium hydroxide to cupric salts. Effective structures of the polymer chelate in solution were assumed on the basis of the visible and the NMR spectra and potentiometric titration.

Notes: The polycondensation reaction of aromatic dicarboxylic acids and diamines by using triphenyl phosphite were carried out in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) in the presence of poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP). The reaction, especially of terephthalic acid (TPA), was markedly facilitated to give the absence of P4VP. The reaction promoted by P4VP was further favored by the addition of various pyridine derivatives; of the pyridines examined, pyridine was most effective, giving the best results at a high level (pyridine/P4VP values up to 26). P4VP of the molecular weight in the range of 1.3 × 104-3.0 × 105 did not affect the viscosity of the resulting polymer. These favorable additive effects of P4VP on the reaction of TPA were not observed in the reactions of isophthalic acid, and m -and p-aminobenzoic acids.

Notes: Metal salts such as lithium chloride were found to facilitate significantly the reaction of carboxylic acids and amines promoted by triphenyl phosphite, and the reaction was applied successfully to the direct polycondensation reaction of dicarboxylic acids and diamines and of p-aminobenzoic acid. Among metal salts tested, lithium chloride was most effective to the reaction; the chloride was involved catalytically in the reaction, its addition of about twice equivalent to triphenyl phosphite giving the most favorable results. Triphenyl phosphite was most effective, whereas diphenyl phosphite was less effective, and alkyl esters gave no polymers. The reaction was also markedly affected by solvents, the most favorable results being given in N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP). Various polyamides of high molecular weight were obtained in quantitative yield.

Notes: A novel and easily processed conductive polymer was prepared from poly(vinyl alcohol)(PVA). Metal chelate onto PVA film exhibited excellent surface resistivity around 100-102 Ω/cm2 when it was treated with reducing agents. The surface of these films was treated with reducing agents which possessed a definite metallic luster. The conducting surface proved to be metallized by x-ray and FSCA analysis. The strongly adhering metal on the film was believed to be responsible for the enhancement of electrical conductivity. The factors that affect the conductivity of metallized film were also studied.
