    Description: Climate change is predicted to cause widespread declines in biodiversity, but these predictions are derived from coarse-resolution climate models applied at global scales. Such models lack the capacity to incorporate microclimate variability, which is critical to biodiversity microrefugia. In forested montane regions, microclimate is thought to be influenced by combined effects of elevation, microtopography, and vegetation, but their relative effects at fine spatial scales are poorly known. We used boosted regression trees to model the spatial distribution of fine-scale, under-canopy air temperatures in mountainous terrain. Spatial models predicted observed independent test data well ( r = 0.87). As expected, elevation strongly predicted temperatures, but vegetation and microtopography also exerted critical effects. Old-growth vegetation characteristics, measured using LiDAR (light detection and ranging), appeared to have an insulating effect; maximum spring monthly temperatures decreased by 2.5°C across the observed gradient in old-growth structure. These cooling effects across a gradient in forest structure are of similar magnitude to 50-year forecasts of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and therefore have the potential to mitigate climate warming at local scales. Management strategies to conserve old-growth characteristics and to curb current rates of primary forest loss could maintain microrefugia, enhancing biodiversity persistence in mountainous systems under climate warming.

    Description: Bacteria were analyzed in a dual-beam flow cytometer after double staining with the fluorescent dyes chromomycin A3 and Hoechst 33258, which bind preferentially to DNA that is rich in guanine-cytosine and adenine-thymine, respectively. The measurements were indicative of the cellular DNA content and base composition, cell concentration, and proliferative state of the population. The ratio of the chromomycin A3 signal to the Hoechst 33258 signal increased with the guanine-cytosine content of the cellular DNA for the six cultured species measured, following expectation.     Notes: An improved optical system has been designed for use in experimental studies of photofield emission. By increasing the angle of convergence of the focused laser beam onto the field emitter a smaller focal spot is obtained. For a given beam intensity, this results in a substantial increase in the irradiance at the emitting surface. In addition, the smaller focal spot reduces the laser-induced temperature rise of the field emitter for a given irradiance. The design of the improved optical system is discussed and its performance is evaluated.

    Notes: Measurements of the temperature rise of a laser-illuminated field emitter show that a tip temperature in excess of 1000 °K can be obtained with a focused laser beam of modest power, and that the temperature rise per unit irradiance varies approximately in inverse proportion to the radius of the focal spot. By measuring the irradiance of the central fringe in the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of a field emitter in a focused laser beam, the profile of the field emitter is mapped without removing it from the vacuum tube. A calculation based on the observed shank profile, and taking into account diffraction in a simple approximation, predicts a peak temperature rise in good agreement with experiment. These findings have important practical applications in photofield emission.

    Notes: The rate of polymerization of styrene initiated by hydroperoxidized atactic polypropylene in a homogeneous toluene solution has been measured at 60 and 70°C. The reaction is first-order with respect to styrene concentration and independent of the polymeric hydroperoxide concentration above 2 × 10-5N hydroperoxide. The individual rate constants, length and frequency of the grafted polystyrene chains along the polypropylene backbone have been calculated and their significance discussed. The initiation rate constant compares closely with values reported for the analogous tert-butyl hydroperoxide-initiated polymerization. The rate constant for the chain transfer termination elementary step at 70°C., however, is 18 times the value reported for the tert-butyl hydroperoxide-initiated polymerization of styrene. This high constant accounts for the relatively low rates of polymerization observed and high termination rates. Chain deactivation is presumably accelerated by increased collisions between growing styrene chains and inactive propylene hydroperoxide and polystyrene molecules. Distribution of polystyrene grafts on polypropylene is estimated from knowledge of effects of styrene concentration, polymeric hydroperoxide concentration, and temperature upon the rate of polymerization.

    Description: Three weeks after arriving near the Pacific Northwest (PNW) coast in November 1805, Lewis and Clarks’ Corps of Discovery experienced a two-day windstorm that may have rivaled the strongest historically documented storms of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Based on the Corps’ detailed historical accounts describing the event as the perfect storm, we characterized the severity of the 1805 windstorm using tree-ring growth anomalies from windsnapped Sitka spruce collected at three sites along the northern Oregon Coast. We compared the 1805 gale to eight other documented events with comparable storm tracks and exceptional magnitude including the 1880 and 1951 events that each caused more than a billion board feet ( c. 2.4 million m 3 ) of windthrow. Statistical comparison of tree-growth responses revealed that the 1805 windstorm was the only event to differ significantly ( 2 ; test, p 〈 0.05, d.f. = 1) from all other storms. Our findings demonstrate the potential application of tree-ring data and historical documents to understand previously obscure climatic events similar to the extreme droughts that led to the demise of the Roanoke Colony during the sixteenth century and adversity experienced by the Jamestown Colony during the seventeenth century. Specifically, we identify the Lewis and Clark tempest of 1805 as being among the most severe PNW windstorms during the past two centuries, and may have contributed to the Corps’ dismal view of coastal Pacific Northwest weather.
