    Description: Climate warming is projected to affect forest water yields but the effects are expected to vary. We asked how forest type and age affect water yield resilience to climate warming. To answer this question, we examined the variability in historical water yields at long-term experimental catchments across Canada and the United States over 5-year cool and warm periods. Using the theoretical framework of the Budyko curve, we calculated the effects of climate warming on the annual partitioning of precipitation (P) into evapotranspiration (ET) and water yield. Deviation (d) was defined as a catchment's change in actual ET divided by P (AET/P; evaporative index) coincident with a shift from a cool to a warm period — a positive d indicates an upward shift in evaporative index and smaller than expected water yields, and a negative d indicates a downward shift in evaporative index and larger than expected water yields. Elasticity was defined as the ratio of interannual variation in potential ET divided by P (PET/P; dryness index) to inter-annual variation in the evaporative index — high elasticity indicates low d despite large range in drying index (i.e., resilient water yields), low elasticity indicates high d despite small range in drying index (i.e., non-resilient water yields). Although the data needed to fully evaluate ecosystems based on these metrics are limited, we were able to identify some characteristics of response among forest types. Alpine sites showed the greatest sensitivity to climate warming with any warming leading to increased water yields. Conifer forests included catchments with lowest elasticity and stable to larger water yields. Deciduous forests included catchments with intermediate elasticity and stable to smaller water yields. Mixed coniferous/deciduous forests included catchments with highest elasticity and stable water yields. Forest type appeared to influence the resilience of catchment water yields to climate warming, with conifer and deciduous catchments more susceptible to climate warming than the more diverse mixed forest catchments.     Description: Aneuploidy in human eggs is the leading cause of pregnancy loss and several genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. Most aneuploidy results from chromosome segregation errors during the meiotic divisions of an oocyte, the egg's progenitor cell. The basis for particularly error-prone chromosome segregation in human oocytes is not known. We analyzed meiosis in more than 100 live human oocytes and identified an error-prone chromosome-mediated spindle assembly mechanism as a major contributor to chromosome segregation defects. Human oocytes assembled a meiotic spindle independently of either centrosomes or other microtubule organizing centers. Instead, spindle assembly was mediated by chromosomes and the small guanosine triphosphatase Ran in a process requiring ~16 hours.     Notes: Abstract We introduce a model of two coupled reaction-diffusion equations to describe the dynamics and propagation of flame fronts in random media. The model incorporates heat diffusion, its dissipation, and its production through coupling to the background reactant density. We first show analytically and numerically that there is a finite critical value of the background density below which the front associated with the temperature field stops propagating. The critical exponents associated with this transition are shown to be consistent with meanfield theory of percolation. Second, we study the kinetic roughening associated with a moving planar flame front above the critical density. By numerically calculating the time-dependent width and equal-time height correlation function of the front, we demonstrate that the roughening process belongs to the universality class of the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang interface equation. Finally, we show how this interface equation can be analytically derived from our model in the limit of almost uniform background density.

    Notes: Abstract We present a neural network model for the formation of ocular dominance stripes on primate visual cortex and examine the generic phase behavior and dynamics of the model. The dynamical equation of ocular dominance development can be identified with a class of Langevin equations with a nonconserved order parameter. We first set up and examine an Ising model with long-range interactions in an external field, which is equivalent to the model described by the Langevin equation. We use both mean-field theory and Monte-Carlo simulations to study the equilibrium phase diagram of this equivalent Ising model. The phase diagram comprises three phases: a striped phase, a hexagonal ‘bubble’ phase, and a uniform paramagnetic phase. We then examine the dynamics of the striped phase by solving the Langevin equation both numerically and by singular perturbation theory. Finally, we compare the results of the model with physiological data. The typical striped structure of the ocular dominance columns corresponds to the zero-field configurations of the model. Monocular deprivation can be simulated by allowing the system to evolve in the absence of an external field at early times and then continuing the simulation in the presence of an external field. The physical and physiological applications of our model are discussed in the conclusion.

    Notes: Abstract The carpal regions of ten cadaver extremities were imaged by CT. The images were combined into a 3-dimensional model of the carpus using a technique based on a dynamic programming algorithm to find an optimal estimate of the location of the bone boundaries in the CT images. The resulting set of surface points on each bone was used to compute volumes and principal and antipodal axes for the bones. A spatial coordinate system was established based on the positions of the centroids of three bones in the distal carpal row. The angular orientations of all carpal bones were determined with respect to this system. The principal axes for the same bone among ten wrist specimens proved to be more widely dispersed than the antipodal axes for the same bones. The antipodal axes also correspond more closely to an intuitive notion of the “longest axis” of the bones. We conclude that the antipodal axis is a more reliable and useful measure of bone orientation than the principal axis.

    Notes: A preliminary study on intercecullar communicative devices in the early human embryo has been made using dye-coupling techniques and electron microscopy (EM). Lucifer yellow injected into single blastomeres of embryos at the 4-cell stage up to the late morula stage did not spread to neighbouring cells, indicating that gap junctions and cytoplasmic bridges are not significant pathways for information transfer. Dye spread was first observed in the blastocyst stage, where trophectoderm cells and inner mass cells were shown to be in communication through gap junctions. Studies at the EM level confirmed this finding. Tight junctions and desmosome-like structures, apparent from the 6-cell stage onward, were located both peripherally and centrally and were initially nonzonular. The role of intercellular devices in the primary differentiation of the human embryo is discussed.
