Notes: Summary The effect of halothane on the action of alcuronium on neuromuscular transmission was studied in the intact dog. Electrical and mechanical evoked responses from stimulation of the ulnar nerve were recorded. The administration of 0.5% halothane prolonged the duration of action of alcuronium by about 50%.

Notes: Summary The slow coextrusion of two non-Newtonian fluids through a rectangular channel is considered. The shape of the interface and the secondary flows are investigated and their dependence on the fluid properties determined.

Notes: Summary The locus coeruleus is one of the most thoroughly investigated mammalian brain areas. Its fibers innervate large parts of the neuraxis, in particular, areas involved in cognitive functions such as the cortex and the hippocampus. A role of locus coeruleus has been proposed in such processes as memory, the control of vigilance, blood pressure and others. Results obtained in this and other laboratories demonstrate that the firing rate of locus coeruleus neurons is affected by a great number of psychoactive agents such as antidepressants, minor tranquillizers, neuroleptics, psychostimulants and certain psychogeriatric drugs. We have attempted to correlate the data obtained on the cell bodies of locus coeruleus with studies reporting effects on terminal areas and thereby gain an overall view of the action of the above mentioned drugs on this cell system. The activity of noradrenergic neurons in locus coeruleus is thought to correlate with the level of cortical vigilance. Special emphasis is placed on the finding that a number of drugs which exert a positive effect on cognitive functions in man and animals increase the firing rate of the rat locus coeruleus neurons.

Notes: Abstract Consideration is given to a simple four constant description of linear viscoelastic behaviour. It is shown that the equivalent mechanical models can be physically unrealistic, with negative moduli. Furthermore, such models satisfy the requirements of i) a positive, monotonic decreasing relaxation function, and ii) positive dissipation. By implication, it is concluded that the spring-dashpot description of linear viscoelasticity is not completely general.

Notes: Abstract The generation of the steady rectilinear flow of an Oldroyd B fluid in a rectangular duct is considered. The Laplace transform is used to separate out the time dependence from the governing equations and a Fourier series is used to solve the resulting Poisson problem in the space variables. It is seen that the presence of elasticity in the fluid gives rise to velocity ‘overshoot’. The solution of Waters and King for the planar channel is recovered at large aspect ratios.

Notes: The need to perform a numerical integration of the exchange-correlation functional because of its non-analyticity severely complicates the accurate application of local-density functional methods to molecules and clusters. The optimal choice of grid points for this integration and the estimation of the error made by the choice are subtle considerations. In particular, because the position and/or weighting of each grid point must change when the nuclear positions change, these errors are most noticeable when different geometries are compared. We have determined a method of grid point selection and weighting that reduces these errors. We have also determined a simple method of estimating the extent of the error made in the particular density of points used for the grid. These results are illustrated for a selection of small molecules.

Notes: Fibers of poly(1,4-phenylene-1,3,4-oxadiazole) have been prepared by dry jet-wet spinning sulfuric acid solutions of the polymer. Polymer was prepared by polymerizing terephthalic acid and hydrazine dihydrochloride in 30% fuming sulfuric acid and directly spinning the resulting solution. Dry jet-wet spinning allows greater flexibility in conditions than does wet spinning in that spinneret temperature and coagulation bath temperature are independent of one another. Therefore, coagulation may be at temperatures well below those needed at the spinneret to maintain a flowing, extrudable solution. Another common advantage of dry jet-wet spinning is application of draw to the extruded fiber before coagulation, but in this system, drawing the fiber before coagulation was shown to be a disadvantage. Fiber properties were maximized by spinning with a spinneret temperature of 58-73°C into a coagulation bath at 3-4°C and with an air gap of 1/4 in. Water as a coagulation medium allowed operation at speeds up to 40 m/min, while with 50% sulfuric acid less than half that speed was reached. Application of draw ratios of 3/1 on the coagulated but still swollen fiber combined with high-temperature treatments at low draw ratios (1.05/l) gave maximum fiber properties-tenacity 6 g/denier, elongation 20-25%, and modulus 200-240 g/denier.
