    Notes: The first gas phase observation of the species InOH is reported through the detection of its electronic spectrum in the near ultraviolet region, between 345 and 377 nm. The molecule was generated by the high temperature reaction between H2O and In metal or between H2 and In2O3, and cooled in a free jet expansion. Two separate electronic transitions have been identified and are tentatively assigned as α1A'←X˜1A' and β1A‘←X˜1A'. Values for the vibrational wavenumbers ν2 (bending vibration) and ν3 (In–O stretching vibration) have been determined for InOH and InOD in all three electronic states involved. There is evidence that the molecule is quasilinear in its ground electronic state which somewhat complicates the values determined for ν2 in this state. Rotational structure was easily resolved at the lowest temperature achieved in this work (Trot≈12 K). Analysis of this structure shows that the molecule is bent in all of the electronic states studied, with a bond angle of about 132° in the X˜ state and about 105° in the α and β states.

    Notes: Patterns of species-richness and endemism in the Gulf of Guinea reflect the region's biogeographic history. Bioko is a continental-shelf island that was recently connected to the African mainland, whereas Príncipe, São Tomé and Annobón are truly oceanic and have never been connected with each other or with the mainland. As a result, Bioko supports a much more diverse flora and fauna but with relatively low levels of endemism at the species level, whereas the oceanic islands are relatively depauperate because of their isolation but rich in endemic taxa. Species endemism is 0–3% on Bioko for angiosperms, bats, birds, reptiles and amphibians, compared with much higher values on Principe for these same taxa of 8% (plants) to 100% (amphibians), on São Tomé between 14% (plants) and 100% (amphibians), and on Annobón 0% (bats) to 71% (reptiles). On a global scale, for their size both Príncipe and São Tomé support unusually high numbers of single-island endemic species of birds, reptiles and amphibia. For its tiny size, Annobón is also notable for its endemic birds and reptiles. Among terrestrial molluscs the rates of endemism are in general higher than for plants and vertebrates, from ca 50% on Bioko to ca 80% on the oceanic islands. In contrast and as might be expected, only Bioko supports a rich freshwater fish fauna and it contains many endemic taxa, whereas the oceanic islands support only a few salt-tolerant species. The Gulf of Guinea islands are also important for their marine organisms, amongst which coral reef fish and marginellid molluscs show high levels of endemism, though they are not especially species-rich. The Gulf of Guinea islands are of great interest to conservationists and evolutionary biologists. Each island, of greatly differing size and degree of isolation, has acquired its unique sub-set of plants and animals separately from the neighbouring mainland, followed by adaptive radiations in situ. For this reason the conservation value of the archipelago as a whole is greater than the sum of the biodiversity contained in its individual islands. Conservation initiatives in the Gulf of Guinea should therefore ensure that representative terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats and groups of organisms are targeted in a co-ordinated manner among the islands.

    Notes: 29Si cross-polarisation NMR was used to study the interaction between silanes and MgCl2 when co-milled. Large changes are seen for the 29Si chemical shift of the silane between the silane in solution and in the solid complex. Interpretation of the differences in chemical shift are hindered by the absence of an adequate semi-empirical theory.     Notes: Short-term triglyceride (TG) synthesis was measured over 48 h in four healthy males from the incorporation rate of deuterium in body water into plasma TG. Subjects drank 0.7 g D2O kg-1 estimated body water (99.8 atom% excess), followed by water containing 1.4 g D2O kg-1 water to maintain plasma deuterium enrichment at plateau. Blood samples (20 ml) were obtained before dosing and every 4 h thereafter. Subjects self-selected three meals each day. TG from each time point were separated from plasma lipids by thin-layer chromatography and combusted to water and CO2. Combustion water was vacuum distilled into Zn-containing Pyrex tubes, reduced to hydrogen gas, and analyzed for deuterium enrichment by isotope ratio mass spectrometry. Deuterium enrichment of TG increased over the 48 h study period for all four subjects studied. Superimposed on this increase were short-term non-periodic fluctuations in enrichment reflecting dietary influx and intra-individual differences in TG metabolism. The TG fractional synthetic rate (FSR) was calculated using linear and mono-exponential models. Triglyceride FSR of the subjects over the first 24 h of the study was 0.0702 ± 0.0048 day-1 (mean ± SEM) by the linear model and 0.0728 ± 0.0051 day-1 by the exponential model. Deuterium enrichment reached a plateau on day 2, indicative of continuing TG synthesis in a saturated body water pool. These results are consistent with the notion of meal-dependent variability in TG synthesis into a small rapid turnover plasma TG pool.
