    Notes: Abstract Samples of the squid Martialia hyadesi were collected aboard two Japanese squid-jigging vessels carrying out commercial fishing trials at the Antarctic Polar Frontal Zone, north Scotia Sea, in February 1989. The dissected stomachs of 61 specimens were classified according to fullness and the contents were examined visually. Identifiable food items included fish sagittal otoliths, crustacean eyes, the lappets on euphausiid first antennule segments and cephalopod sucker rings. The most frequent items in the squid's diet were the myctophid fishes Krefftichthys anderssoni and Electrona carlsbergi, the euphausiid Euphausia superba and a hyperiid amphipod, probably Themisto gaudichaudi. A small proportion of the sample had been feeding cannibalistically. Total lengths of the fish prey were estimated from sagittal otolith size using published relationships. All fish were relatively small; 7 to 35% of squid mantle-length. However, it is possible that some heads of larger fish are discarded by the squid and so are not represented by otoliths in the stomach contents. Over the size range of squid in the sample there was no relationship between size of fish prey and size of squid. Similarly, when the squid sample was divided into groups according to prey categories: crustaceans, crustaceans+fish, fish, cephalopod, there was no evidence that dietary preference was related to squid size. The prevalence of copepod-feeding myctophids in the diet of this squid, which is itself a major prey item of some higher predators in the Scotia Sea, suggests that a previously unrecognised food chain: copepod-myctophid-M. hyadesi-higher predator, may be an important component of the Antarctic oceanic ecosystem.

    Notes: The photosynthetic apparatus of Rhodobacter sphaeroides is comprised of three types of pigment-protein complex: the photochemical reaction centre and its attendant LH1 and LH2 light-harvesting complexes. To augment existing deletion/insertion mutants in the genes coding for these complexes we have constructed two further mutants, one of which is a novel double mutant which is devoid of all three types of complex. We have also constructed vectors for the expression of either LH1, LH2 or reaction-centre genes. The resulting system allows each pigment-protein complex to be studied either as part of an intact photosystem or as the sole complex in the cell. In this way we have demonstrated that reaction centres can assemble independently of either light-harvesting complex in R sphaeroides. In addition, the isolation of derivatives of the deletion/insertion mutants exhibiting spontaneous mutations in carotenoid biosynthesis provides an avenue for examining the role of carotenoids in the assembly of the photo-synthetic apparatus. We show that the LH1 complex is assembled regardless of the carotenoid background, and that the type of carotenoid present modifies the absorbance of the LH1 bacteriochlorophylls.

    Notes: An automated vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) has been constructed in order to facilitate measurements of the magnetization of conducting samples of different fields and temperatures over a period of time.     Notes: The magnitude and temperature of the Verwey transition have been investigated for germanium- and fluorine-doped magnetite to assess the effectiveness of A sublattice and anion substitutions in displacing and suppressing the transition. It is found that the quantity G=d ln(σT)/d(1/T), where σ is the conductivity, is more sensitive to the existence of the transition than σ itself: the consequence is that the presence of the transition can be detected to higher degrees of substitution than heretofore. The rate of variation of the Verwey temperature Tv with level of substitution and the condition for suppression of the transition are discussed.

    Notes: Abstract— Fracture due to crack growth under mixed Modes 1 and 2 loading is considered. The cracking mechanism addressed is that of microvoid growth and linkage under small-scale-yielding conditions. Stress analyses are described which take into account the blunting of the crack tip as the load increases. A damage function is defined, and is evaluated in the intensely-straining region near the blunted notch tip. As the load increases, the size of this damaged region increases until a critical level of damage has been reached over a material-dependent length scale and fracture ensues. The local fracture criterion is then related to the applied loads. The predictions of the model are tested against experiments under Mode 1 loading and also against some mixed Modes 1 and 2 data on a range of materials. The results of the model are conservative and reproduce the experimentally observed Mode 1 failures, in terms of AT, at fracture, to within 25%. In the case of mixed mode loading the model conservatively predicts the fracture load for most of the data.

    Notes: Abstract High resolution seismic data from Torres Strait off northern Australia provide the first insights into the development of the striking platform reefs of the region. In the southern part of Torres Strait, where the sea floor is shallow and featureless, the Torres Reefs have developed as long, narrow platforms parallel to very strong east-west flowing tidal currents. The reefs have expanded since the end of the post-glacial marine transgression (approximately 6000 years ago) through preferential growth at each end of their platforms. In these localized areas sheltered from the strong tidal currents, patch reefs have developed. Sediments swept from the reef margin and the inter-reef channels are deposited in these current lee areas at the ends of the reefs. The combination of the patch reefs and reefal sediments provides the essentials for extension of the platform reefs. The seismic data confirm that modern reef expansion is occurring without there being a high substrate for coral colonization. The evolutionary sequence from an uncolonized seafloor to a mature platform reef envisages a synchronous process of patch reef development and sediment accumulation.
