Abstract A microprocessor-based instrument has been developed to assist in the processing of continuous flow analyser chart recordings. After the identification of peaks by an operator, the microcomputer applies baseline correction, performs a logarithmic transformation, scales according to prescribed standards and prints a final result. The instrument meets a processing need between the requirements of large computer-controlled systems and those of small analysers using manual methods of chart analysis. Economy is achieved by combining the peak identification skills of a human operator with the superior computational performance of the microprocessor. It has been found in the analysis of laboratory recordings that use of this instrument has resulted in a lower chart-processing error rate which is attributed to the reduction of operator tasks.
