    Notes: A dominated-type convergence theorem is proved for the operator-valued Feynman integral defined via the Trotter product formula. This definition is intimately related to the one of Feynman and the physical setting is the same as in his original paper.     Notes: Responses of three locally endemic (Eucalyptus brevistylis, Eucalyptus jacksonii and Eucalyptus guilfoylei) and three co-occurring regional eucalypts (Eucalyptus marginata, Eucalyptus diversicolor and Corymbia calophylla) to moderate- and high-intensity fires were examined in granitic terrain of the Tingle Mosaic, south-western Australia. Significant associations between diameter distributions and community type (CT) for each species (P 〈 0.001) suggest that fire response will also vary according to the habitat/fire interaction. None of the species were fire sensitive, although responses differed both within and between species, and with CT. All species examined predominately consisted of several cohorts of regeneration within a forest stand. Each species had thick bark and re-sprouted from crown epicormics following 100% scorch of the mature tree. The quantity and type of regeneration in relation to gaps created by individual dead trees following fire differed between species; for example, E. guilfoylei regeneration was strongly associated with gaps, and C. calophylla with non-gaps. However, regeneration of the two tall open-forest species, E. jacksonii and E. diversicolor were not most associated with either gaps or non-gaps. The very low levels of regeneration of E. brevistylis following fire and the high proportion of stems of E. jacksonii that were hollow butted (40% of stems 〉 1 m DBHOB) may be factors associated with narrow endemism of these species and may affect the vulnerability of these eucalypts to fire. The interaction of seed availability, intense fires and subsequent rainfall may be critical in the long term survival of these species. Eucalyptus guilfoylei, by contrast, appears well adapted to the increasing levels of disturbance likely in the region where these species occur. The vulnerability of a locally endemic species in a fire-prone environment is likely to reflect differences to the prevailing adaptations of the dominant species rather than an inherent ability of the species to survive or respond. Management regimes must account for variations in species responses to fire in different CTs if the long-term survival chances of local endemics are to be enhanced.

    Notes: Abstract The identity and relative contributions of various sources of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs) to recently deposited sediments collected in Newark Bay and its major tributaries were determined using polytopic vector analysis (PVA), a multivariate statistical technique relatively new in the chemometric literature. The concentrations of 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/Fs were assayed in eighty-one surface and near-surface sediment samples collected from the Passaic River, Hackensack River, Arthur Kill, Elizabeth River, Kill Van Kull, Port Elizabeth, and Port Newark navigation channels and Robins Reef, which is located in New York Harbor. PVA modeling revealed five predominant 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/F fingerprint patterns in geographically plausible distributions throughout the estuary. This was consistent with the current understanding of hydrodynamic and sedimentation conditions reported in the literature for Newark Bay. Three patterns contained 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (2,3,7,8-TCDD), which is alleged to originate from a single industrial source on the lower Passaic River. One of the fingerprints containing 2,3,7,8-TCDD was present in moderate proportions (10–20%) in surface sediments near the site, but was generally observed in low abundance (〈5%) elsewhere in the estuary. A fingerprint pattern characteristic of PCDD/F profiles in effluents from municipal sewage and waste water treatment plants was widely distributed in the estuary, but reached its highest relative proportions in the Elizabeth River. A third fingerprint pattern was highest in the Arthur Kill and lower Passaic River and closely matched the residue patterns found in several types of combustion sources. A fourth finger-print pattern in Hackensack River and lower Passaic River sediment matched the PCDD/F profile reported in PCB Aroclor® formulations. A fifth fingerprint pattern matched the profile in recycled pulp and paper mill effluents and was highest in Kill van Kull and upper Passaic River sediment. The majority of PCDD/Fs in sediment from Reaches B, C, and D of Port Newark and Port Elizabeth were attributable to sediments transported via the Arthur Kill and the Kill Van Kull. These results are consistent with those previously reported using principal components analysis, which indicated that 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/F patterns in the sediments of Newark Bay are consistent with discharges from multiple sources.

    Notes: Abstract The authors have studied the mechanism for recrystallization texture in some soft magnetic materials with fcc crystal structure. The alloys used were 77% Ni-14% Fe-5% Cu-4 wt% Mo permalloys. Thin foils selected area electron diffraction (SAD) and X-ray diffraction techniques were employed using a Philips 300 Electron Microscope (EM 300) and an X-ray diffractometer, respectively. Investigations were carried out on deformed, recovered and recrystallized states of the alloys. The various results show that the cold-rolled (deformed) and recovered states of the alloys possess copper-type of rolling texture with {110} 〈112〉 texture as the predominant deformation texture though other minor components such as {112} 〈111〉, {110} 〈001〉 and {123} 〈420〉 textures were detected. No cube texture, {100} 〈001〉 was detected in any of the deformed and recovered materials though the recrystallization texture in these alloys is the cube texture, {100} 〈001〉 which forms over 80% of the annealing texture in these alloys. It is concluded here that the detection of cube texture in the deformed and recovered materials is not a prerequisite for the detection of cube texture in these alloys. The present work is not conclusive about the mechanism for recrystallization texture, but it is proposed here that recrystallization texture, in these alloys is attributed to the growth-oriented mechanism based on the following model. (1) The lattice domains which form the recrystallization texture are present in the cold-rolled matrix. (2) The favoured site for nucleation are the grain boundaries and deformation band boundaries. (3) For the nucleus to be able to grow and form the recrystallization texture it must possess the necessary free energy. (4) Grains must be capable of growth into two or more orientations between which it forms, i.e. the nuclei which form the cube texture should have a [111] pole in common with the matrix in which they grow and a rotation of about 30° around this pole.

    Notes: Abstract Magnetic domains were observed by Lorentz microscopy in thin foils of a 6.06 wt% Si-Fe alloy. The foils were prepared from rapidly solidified Si-Fe ribbons, in the as-cast and the as-annealed conditions. A complex domain structure was observed in small grain-size specimens and a typical structure of anti-parallel domains was observed in large grain-size specimens. An asymmetric periodic structure formed above a certain critical thickness of foil.
