Abstract Whiskers formed on the surface of a Ni-20Cr alloy during oxidation at high temperatures (1000 and 1200°C) were studied by scanning electron microscopy. The growth of these whiskers was attributed to the presence of water vapor in the atmosphere. The nature of these whiskers and their growth direction have been determined by electron diffraction with a transmission electron microscope (TEM). Their composition, determined by X-ray energy dispersive analysis (EDX), was NiCr2O4. The growth direction was of the (011) type.
