Description: SUMMARY The deep structure of the Upper Rhine Graben (URG), a continental rift in SW Germany and E France, is still poorly known. This deficit impedes a full understanding of the geodynamic evolution of this prominent rift. We study the lithosphere–asthenosphere structure using teleseismic waveforms obtained from the passive broad-band TIMO project across the central URG. The recovered, crust-corrected traveltime residuals relative to the iasp91 earth model are tiny (mostly less than 0.2–0.3 s). The average measured slowness (〈1 s deg –1 ) and backazimuth (〈5°) deviations are also very small and do not show any systematic wave front anomalies. These observed perturbation values are smaller than expected ones from synthetic 3-D ray tracing modelling with anomalies exceeding 2–3 per cent seismic velocity in the mantle. Thus there is no significant hint for any deep-seated anomaly such as a mantle cushion, etc. This result means that the rifting process did not leave behind a lower lithospheric signature, which could be clearly verified with high-resolution teleseismic experiments. The only significant traveltime perturbation at the central URG is located at its western side in the upper crust around a known geothermal anomaly. The upper crustal seismic anomaly with traveltime delays of 0.2–0.3 s cannot be explained with increased temperature alone. It is possibly related to a zone of highly altered granite. In the west of our network a traveltime anomaly (0.6–0.7 s delay) related with the Eifel plume is confirmed by the TIMO data set.

Description: The region around the town Albstadt, SW Germany, was struck by four damaging earthquakes with magnitudes greater than 5 during the last century. These earthquakes occurred along the Albstadt Shear Zone (ASZ), which is characterized by more or less continuous microseismicity. As there are no visible surface ruptures that may be connected to the fault zone, we study its characteristics by its seismicity distribution and faulting pattern. We use the earthquake data of the state earthquake service of Baden-Württemberg from 2011 to 2018 and complement it with additional phase picks beginning in 2016 at the AlpArray and StressTransfer seismic networks in the vicinity of the ASZ. This extended data set is used to determine new minimum 1-D seismic vp and vs velocity models and corresponding station delay times for earthquake relocation. Fault plane solutions are determined for selected events, and the principal stress directions are derived. The minimum 1-D seismic velocity models have a simple and stable layering with increasing velocity with depth in the upper crust. The corresponding station delay times can be explained well by the lateral depth variation of the crystalline basement. The relocated events align about north–south with most of the seismic activity between the towns of Tübingen and Albstadt, east of the 9∘ E meridian. The events can be separated into several subclusters that indicate a segmentation of the ASZ. The majority of the 25 determined fault plane solutions feature an NNE–SSW strike but NNW–SSE-striking fault planes are also observed. The main fault plane associated with the ASZ dips steeply, and the rake indicates mainly sinistral strike-slip, but we also find minor components of normal and reverse faulting. The determined direction of the maximum horizontal stress of 140–149∘ is in good agreement with prior studies. Down to ca. 7–8 km depth SHmax is bigger than SV; below this depth, SV is the main stress component. The direction of SHmax indicates that the stress field in the area of the ASZ is mainly generated by the regional plate driving forces and the Alpine topography.

Notes: The reactions of 1,6-dialkyl-1,6-diazacyclodeca-3,8-diynes (9, a = CH3, b = C2H5, c = i-C3H7) with HCl, H2O and CH3OH have been investigated. The reaction of 9c with HCl selectively gives N,N′-diisopropyl-4-chloro-1,2,3,5,6,7-hexahydro-2,6-naphthyridine (13c) in quantitative yield. Investigation of this reaction at different temperatures allows the activation parameters for the process to be derived (ΔH≠ = 24 ± 1 kcal · mol-1, ΔS≠ = - 9 ± 2 cal · mol-1 · K-1). The regioselective reaction of 9c with methanol affords a quantitative yield of N,N′-diisopropyl-4-methoxy-1,2,3,4,5,6,7-hexahydro-2,6-naphthyridine (29c). Addition of water to 9a in the presence of H2SO4 gives N,N-dimethyl-7-oxo-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-2,6-naphthyridine (28a) in low yields (15%). If the addition of water is carried out in the presence of Hg2+, the yield of 28a is increased considerably. The mechanisms of all three reactions are discussed and those involving electrophilic addition (AdE2) are favored.

Notes: The preparation of N,N′-dialkyl- and N,N′-diaryl-1,6-diazacyclodeca-3,8-diynes was achieved by reaction of alkyl- or arylamines with 1,4-dihalobut-2-yne under dilution conditions in yields of 5-15%. The compounds synthesized by this procedure were the N,N′-dimethyl (2b), N,N′-diethyl (2c), N,N′-diisopropyl (2d), N,N′-di-tert-butyl (2e), N,N′-dicyclohexyl (2f), N,N′-diphenyl (2g), and N,N′-di-p-tolyl (2h) derivatives. The parent compound 2a was obtained in ca. 40% yield by heating 2d with α-chloroethylchloroformate (20). Using 1,9-dibromonona-2,7-diyne (10) and methylamine or isopropylamine, respectively, the corresponding N-alkyl-1-azacyclodeca-3,8-diynes 4b and 4d were synthesized under dilution conditions. By heating 4d with 20 we obtained 1-azacyclodeca-3,8-diyne (4a). As side products of the cyclization reactions the trimers 18 and tetramers 12 and 19 were isolated and characterized. N-methyl-1-azacycloundeca-3,9-diyne (14b) was prepared by reaction of 1,10-dibromodeca-3,8-diyne (13) with methylamine.
