    Notes: Abstract The mutual catalytic effect between iron(II) and antimony(III) on the chromium(VI)-iodide kinetic reactions has been studied by stopped-flow FIA. The concept of mutual catalytic coefficient is defined. The deviations from additive principles of absorbance within certain concentration ranges in previous procedures can be compensated effectively, by introducing the mutual catalytic coefficient into the simultaneous determination of a binary mixture with stopped-flow-FIA method. The linear concentration ranges have been enlarged, 0–3.5 μg/ml Fe(II) and 0–3.7 μg/ml Sb(III) compared with 0–1.2 μg/ml Fe(II) and 0–2.0 μg/ml Sb(III) without use of the coefficient. Iron and antimony contents in wastewater, a simulated sample and a zinc standard were determined, the recoveries and relative standard deviations being, respectively, 99.8–101.3% and 2.7–3.6% for iron and 95.4–100.3% and 2.3–5.3% for antimony compared with 95.2–98% and 3.0–4% for iron and 96–104% and 4.5–4.8% for antimony, assuming additivity.

    Notes: Abstract Measurements of light scattering from a ferrofluid were undertaken as functions of both magnetic field and particle concentration. The results show that the distribution pattern of light intensity in space is a continuous banding perpendicular to the field direction. The light intensity weakens with increasing scattering angle. The experiments also indicate that the scattering coefficient increases both with the magnetic field and with the particle concentration and tends to saturate at higher field strengths. Finally, the experimental results are discussed in terms of an expanded theory of light scattering established by considering the widths of the chains formed in the ferrofluid as functions of both the magnetic field and the particle concentration.

    Notes: Abstract The elastoplastic model in the deviatoric stress space is constructed to describe the cyclic undrained creeping behaviour of soft clays under cyclic stress by using Mises yield criterion and the concept of a field of hardening moduli. Furthermore, the effect of model parameters on the deformation is studied, and a method is given to determine quantitatively model parameters from results of cyclic triaxial tests of the saturated soft clay.

    Notes: A new appartus for measuring the energy distribution of an axial ion beam is decribed in this paper. Because this apparatus is combined with an ion gun exit aperture, the assembly error has been decreased. Hence, it is possible to measure an energy spread as low as 0.36 eV. In addition, the total and axial energy distribution of the ions from the ion source and the lenses of the Kornelsen gun are measured.The variation of ion beam current, ion beam density and minimum beam diameter with a change of pressure in the ion source and ion energy have also been described.Also, a semi-empirical formula for the relation of ion beam diameter d with ion energy E and ion source pressure P is given as \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$d = k(p)/\sqrt {E{\rm }} + f(p)$$ \end{document}

    Description: This study proposes a method to recognize façades from large-scale urban scenes based on multi-level image features utilizing a recently developed oblique aerial photogrammetry technique. The method involves the use of multi-level image features, a bottom-up feature extraction procedure to produce regions of interest through monoscopic analysis, and then a coarse-to-fine feature matching strategy to characterise and match the regions in a stereoscopic model. Feature extraction from typical urban Manhattan scenes is based on line segments. Windows are re-organised based on the spatial constraints of line segments and the homogeneous structure of the spectrum. Façades as regions of interest are successfully constructed with a remarkable single edge and evidence from windows to get rid of occlusion. Feature matching is hierarchically performed beginning from distinctive facades and regularly distributed windows to the sub-pixel point primitives. The proposed strategy can effectively solve ambiguity and multi-solution problems in the complex urban scene matching process, particularly repetitive and poor-texture façades in oblique view.

    Description: The fine particulate matter (PM2.5) problem has attracted much scientific and public attention, due to its effects on visibility, human health, and global climate. There are three factors that have important effect on PM2.5 mass concentration: domestic pollutant emission sources, external sources outside of the country, and the meteorological conditions. Nagasaki is a coastal prefecture located at the westernmost part of Japan, which is an ideal location to study pollutants from long range transport and correlation between PM2.5 and meteorological conditions. In this paper, PM2.5 concentration data and meteorological data were obtained during 1 January 2013~31 December 2013. The spatial distribution depicts that the western part of the study area has the most serious PM2.5 pollution. The correlation analysis results between PM2.5 concentration and meteorological data showed that temperature had a negative, and precipitation had a positive, correlation with PM2.5. There was a threshold in the correlations between humidity and wind speed and PM2.5. The correlation was positive or negative depending on the meteorological variable values, if these were lower or higher than the threshold. From the relationship with wind direction, it can be depicted that the west wind might bring the most pollutants to Nagasaki.

    Description: An instrumental matrix approach to design output feedback passive controller for switched singular systems is proposed in this paper. The nonlinear inequality condition including Lyapunov inverse matrix and controller gain matrix is decoupled by introducing additional instrumental matrix variable. Combined with multiple Lyapunov function method, the nonlinear inequality is transformed into linear matrix inequality (LMI). An LMI condition is presented for switched singular system to be stable and passive via static output feedback under designed switching signal. Moreover, the conditions proposed do not require the decomposition of Lyapunov matrix and its inverse matrix or fixing to a special structure. The theoretical results are verified by means of an example. The method introduced in the paper can be effectively extended to a single singular system and normal switched system.

    Description: Detecting partial discharge (PD) is an effective way to evaluate the condition of high-voltage electrical equipment insulation. The UHF detection method has attracted attention due to its high sensitivity, strong interference resistance, and ability to locate PDs. In this paper, a miniaturized equiangular spiral antenna (ESA) for UHF detection that uses a printed circuit board is proposed. I-shaped, L-shaped, and C-shaped microstrip baluns were designed to match the impedance between the ESA and coaxial cable and were verified by a vector network analyzer. For comparison, three other types of UHF antenna were also designed: A microstrip patch antenna, a microstrip slot antenna, and a printed dipole antenna. Their antenna factors were calibrated in a uniform electric field of different frequencies modulated in a gigahertz transverse electromagnetic cell. We performed comparison experiments on PD signal detection using an artificial defect model based on the international IEC 60270 standard. We also conducted time-delay test experiments on the ESA sensor to locate a PD source. It was found that the proposed ESA sensor meets PD signal detection requirements. The sensor’s compact size makes it suitable for internal installation in high-voltage electrical equipment.
